Life in the world of the 22nd Century

Spoiler Alert!
This entry contains info about the new and awesome Star Trek movie, which I was fortunate enough to view an advance screening of tonight! Though I try not to reveal pertinent, story-ruining info, it does contain my take of the movie that may affect your expectation of it, in the same manner that everyone told me that The Ring was the scariest movie ever and I finally saw it and thought it was pretty damned lame.

It could've just been the atmosphere, but I thought it was awesome, in that it generated awe. Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams of LOST and Cloverfield fame, takes the original crew from the original "Wagon Train to the stars" series of the sixties and does for them what Casino Royale did for James Bond. And much like Royale, there is no shortage of modern cinematography, fun-explody special effects, and a solid story that carries the whole way through.

It's all fresh faces in this one; the only Star Trek veteran making a cameo is Leonard Nimoy. No hard feelings to the Bill-Shat, right? But they all did an outstanding job of playing faithful to the characters created by their predecessors.

This film explores the back story of the original U.S.S. Enterprise crew and how they got to be that way. For character development, the story focuses mainly on Kirk, but also goes into Spock's life. The story follows Kirk's raucous childhood on up through his tenure at Starfleet Academy where his desire to prove himself at all costs shows through. Events progress, familiar faces meet for the first time and a lot of stories we know about the characters' past are revealed.

There's no shortage of action in this Trek flick, as the same nemesis from Nemesis, the Romulans, are again up to no good. There is little time for formal diplomacy in this engagement, as quick decisions have to be made and quick action taken, from fights to flights to hand-to-hand and blade-to-katana combat and good old-fashioned phaser and photon torpedo fights. Make sure you sit a few rows back to be able to take in all of the delightful explosions and such!

Some purists make take issue with the design; the model of the Enterprise is significantly different, but I feel that a good job was done making the scenery and settings of the 22nd century Federation look very realistic, albeit still futuristic while hearkening slightly to the "simplistic" design of the original series (Think Enterprise, the series, advanced). These factors will fall by the wayside for a film that stands well on its own. If at the end, you're wondering what to make of the story, just remember what Doc Brown said at the end of Back to the Future III: "The future hasn't been written yet; no one's has." And in this one, they do go boldly where the Star Trek franchise hasn't gone before.

On the Davis-Humphrey Scale of Rating Movies, this one is a definite 4: Go and see it even if you have to pay!

Oh yeah, special note. You know J.J. Abrams is involved, because there is yet another unexplained large monster featured in the movie. Some birds cannot change...
