Alright, you guys know what my business is. I play drums at Sergei's and cook for people-- both of which are open for everyone to enjoy, by the way. You can stop by the bar at night, it's when my girl and I are usually around, or just drop a note on my comm if you want something cooked for you. But now I'm gonna go ahead and direct a question ( Read more... )

Scavenging and experimenting.

[that's all]

Um, sorry if this sounds intrusive, but bandages? Are you okay?

[and being a worry-wart. But that's not official]

Yeah, yeah. I'm fine, just bonked my head and broke the skin. No worries.

Experimenting? On what?

Oh, all right. If you're sure.

Machinery, wires, metal durability, water...I'm considering testing the fire, too. Anything, really.

Yeah, I'm sure. But thanks for the concern.

No kidding, huh? Guess you've gotta do something to keep yourself occupied here. I don't think I've a sharp enough head on my shoulders for experiments.

Yes. I may not be able to do anything that I would like to, here. There's limits to my capabilities without a lab, and I'd need to maufacture certain tools before I could do anything particularly advanced. Currently it's just collecting basic data and forming hypothesis. Simple matters. Time consuming.

And I don't have any skill with cooking, or with music. We all have our hobbies.

Oh, really? What sort of tools? There's probably some way to make them... although, granted, if there is you'd know it far before I.

So... what, you trying to get some insight into the strange workings of this boat? Or basically just tinkering for the fun of it?

A microscope, burners, preferably a cold storage of some sort...and plenty more than that. The only real difficulty would be the microscope, as the glass is particularly fragile and finicky, and it's doubtful I could find a base around here powerful enough...

Though of course, if I collected enough different varieties of glass...

[cough. ANYWAY.]

Ah. Both, really. Depending on what I'm working on at the time. The metal duability and wire tests are usuall for my own satisfaction, though most of what I do is centered on this boat, yes.

I've heard playing the drums is difficult.

[Gideon takes a mental inventory of the items Don is rattling off. He doubts he'll have much luck finding it, but hey, doesn't hurt to keep an eye out.]

Hah, well. Here's hoping you find some stuff out, then. I've been here for months and this place still confuses me.

Difficult? I've heard so, too. Starting out is always sort of hard, because you have to practice over and over again... Coordinating the hands and feet is what gives a lot of people a hard time, I've found.

This place seems to be based on being confusing, honestly.

[Seriously. Don hates it.]

How long have you been playing?

Not surprising given the apparent insanity of the captain.

... How long have I been playing? Geeze, I first picked up the drumsticks in college. Before that-- and a little bit after it, too-- I was more focused on the guitar. But then when my band started forming, I had to step aside for a more talented guitarist; all those years I spent drumming came in handy with my new position.

You're apart of a band?

[mutant ninja turtle Don may be, but he is also teenage. That is so cool.]

Do you enjoy playing the drums, then? Or was it only out of necessity?

Was. Before I got brought here.

[Slightly bitter tone. Then, it smooths out.]

But uh, Kate and I. We're working on getting a new group together to play at the bar during the night... so that's good. I always like playing with her. As for your last question... I enjoy it, definitely. I'm more suited for drumming than playing the guitar in my mind, and it was getting that position in the band that helped me realize it.

[Don catches that bitter tone]

That's good then, that you found something you enjoy doing and that you're suited for.

[it reminds him of finding his staff, but he doesn't say so]

If you don't mind, I'd like to hear you play sometime. I haven't been to Sergei's before, not really, so I never knew you played there.

Haha, neither of us would mind. We're always trying to encourage people to come on down and listen. Sometimes listening to music can help people relax... it might only be a temporary respite, but it's there nonetheless.

It would be good to see you down there.

I'll...stop by sometime, then.

Thanks!

[there is such a smile in his voice there. Sure it means going out in public willingly, but still. Respite is respite.]

[Gideon is happy to hear the happy tone.]

Hey, no problem. If you ever happen to know when you'll be stopping by, tell me and I'll try to whip up something for you to snack on ahead of time or something. Even geniuses gotta eat, right?
