I stopped my first would-be high dollar thief today. A woman came through my checkout line and set a small item that came to less than $3.50 down on the counter. When I gestured to the huge flatbed cart filled with plants she said she paid for it outside but then remembered she needed something inside. I told her I needed to see her receipt and she did the whole patting her pockets fruitlessly before shrugging and saying she'd go back through where she paid for it. I said that would be fine, they'd remember such a big purchase. She finished up her small purchase with me and I got distracted when one of the Head Cashiers came by to tell me something and the one picked up the handle to the cart and took a step forward to continue her walk out. I turned back and 'reminded' her that she needed to go out through the garden center. She turned around and walked toward the garden center doors and I responded to the Head Cashier's inquiring look by explaining what had just happened. She got together with a manager who went out to the garden center through the front doors. It seems the cashier outside was already on to the woman who'd been lurking around gathering plants for well over an hour. When the woman went outside she spent another hour wandering around, sometimes talking on her phone and lurking near the exit. Finally she went up and paid for the plants she'd supposedly already paid for and bitched at the cashier to not crush her plants while she was moving them around to get at the barcodes. The whole lot came up to $320+ and I got to fill out my first paperwork of a would-be thief. Several times a week we get emails from security with BOLOs of thefts or attempted thefts from our store or our sister stores near by. Some people do get away with a lot of high dollar items but what they don't realized is that if we're on to them at all security can follow their progress through the store via the various cameras and then the fairly high resolution cameras outside get the make and model and license numbers of their cars. The store is actually pretty darn good at prosecuting thieves that 'get away'.
On another note, thank god the weather is supposed to break tonight and back down to the normal hot weather of July - it'll only hit 92 tomorrow - because I've had a low grade heat headache for almost 2 days now which flares up when I've been at work a couple of hours. And tomorrow is my single day off. I'd like to do nothing all day but I at least have to do laundry. Than I'll do nothing.
