It's still early days so I'll (mostly) withhold my thoughts about how the new year is going so far.
As with most businesses, the few weeks after the beginning of the year, which is generally the end of the fiscal year, are a frantic scrambling of belt tightening and cutting of hours. I'm not scheduled to work tomorrow. As much as I would really like a 3-day weekend I told The stocking crew boss that I would come in if there was a truck. This morning I was torn between hoping for a truck (because I desperately need the hours and the extra pay) and hoping for no truck (because I'm so tired, emotionally as well as physically). Well, there's a truck so I'm going in - at 2 am. *headdesk* I know I'll feel less stressed with a bigger paycheck but damn I was really looking forward to that 3-day weekend.
Being poor sucks. But then, I have a roof over my head complete with electricity, heat and running water, food in the kitchen (I have a big batch of beef, mushroom and barley soup on the stove), and a car that now runs (at a huge price - but at least I had the money to get it fixed) so I guess I can't bitch and moan too much. Bullshit. I'll bitch and moan as much as I damn well want, I'll just realize how petty I'm being while I do it.
After a week of unseasonably warm weather we're in another cold snap. It was 14 degrees this morning but it'll be in the single digits when I go to work in the wee dark hours tomorrow. It snowed last night taking me by surprise because I thought the snow was coming tonight. Only a couple of inches and it's been so cold that the snow is light and crystallized and you can practically blow it off your car, but that crystalline structure makes it pretty slick when it's been packed down by cars. Anyway, yesterday morning I went down to my car at o'dark-thirty, rejoiced at no heavy frost to scrape, got in the car and pulled the door shut only to have it bounce back open. This happened about a month ago during our first deep freeze. I didn't have to worry about it during the second freeze since my car wasn't working, so I forgot about it. The locking mechanism inside the door panel freezes open. On both days I had to drive to work at a crawl while holding my door shut. The first time the sun was enough to thaw out whatever was frozen so I got to close the door on the way home. I wasn't so lucky yesterday. And it still wouldn't latch when I got home at 10 am. I dug out a can of windshield de-icer and sprayed it into the opening where the door latches then went upstairs for several hours. When I can down in the afternoon, bringing a couple of bungee straps just in case it wouldn't latch this morning. The lock had released so at least I got to lock my car overnight. This morning I started the car and then got out to clean off the snow and the door bounced back open. *sigh* But it did latch when I got in again! And ever since then. So at least there's a tick in the win column. We'll see how it goes in the morning.
At least yesterday afternoon I managed to get a few things done. I've been a little bummed since the week before Christmas and have come to almost a complete standstill as soon as I'm home. Hopefully I'll be in the mood to be a little more active this weekend - short though it is.
We'll see.
I hope everyone else's New Year has begun well.
