Yup, I'm alive. I've been around, reading other people's posts and commenting occasionally. I had a nice Skype chat with
spasticat earlier today and I told her I kept thinking about getting back into posting but kept coming up empty as to how to describe my life since the last time I was heard from. Then I decided...I'm not. Let's just suffice it to say that 2013 (and actually the last couple of months of 2012 have suckled mightily. I'd call for a do-over but I'm terrified I might actually have to live the last half year over. Besides, the crap is still going on and probably will be for at least the next 3-4 months. 2013 is going to be pretty much a wash for me. It's nothing earth-shattering or life-changing, just too much shit piled into one box and it's just getting a little too heavy carry.
Well, enough about that.
Work? Sometimes it sucks to an incredible degree and sometimes it's...OK. I actually like my job, as impossible as the company makes it sometimes. It's just that some of the people who have control over me are less than desirable.
The weather has been so weird the last few months. Three major snowstorms last winter when we normally might have 1 every couple of years. Early, early spring had about a week pushing 90 and then we had snow in May-wtf? Then we had several weeks of typical Midwest spring weather - maybe a bit rainier than normal. And then several weeks of monsoon like behavior when the skies would open up in the afternoon and absolutely pour. The last 2.5 weeks or so have been summer - hot and muggy. But this weekend? This weekend has been absolutely divine! Mid-to-upper 70s during the day, mid 60s at night and low, low humidity. Perfect! It's getting down to 59 tonight and next week is supposed to be mid 80s then creepy up. I'm good with that.
My balcony garden is doing good. In the spring I had little Packman broccoli - actually quite a bit of it - lots of bok choy and lots of kale. The first two are gone but I'm still enjoying the kale. I have tomatoes coming on, some chilis ready to pick and I just picked two monster cucumbers today. Plus there are fresh herbs and pretty flowers. I finally began to learn to use the digital camera I was so hot to buy for Christmas and got some pictures. I'll try to post them later this week.
Phouka is doing good. He also loves this weather since he has free access to the balcony whenever he wants when it's this nice. My brother is good, too. I went and picked him up for the Memorial Day weekend. I had 4 days off and he spent the night and we caught up and watched military movies and shows. He'd never seen Generation Kill! And for some unknown reason he can't remember the name and keeps referring to it as Lost Generation. WTF?
Fannishly for the last few months it's mostly been Teen Wolf (and I'm enjoying the new season immensely). Just in the last couple of days though I finally responded to the plethora of juicy long SPN and SPN-RPS fic due to the Bigbang and I've switched gears. But then Friday night I felt the desire to re-watch Band of Brothers. One episode in I decided to watch The Pacific afterwards (which I've never seen), but after 3 episodes of BoB I got sucked into The Pacific. I didn't know Jacob Pitts (Deputy Tim Gutterson of Justified) was in it! I love Jacob Pitts. Unfortunately he's gone after 5 of the 10 episodes. I haven't watched ep 6 yet and as far as I'm concerned, unless they come out and say Hoosier (his character) is dead - he isn't!) But now I'm sidetracked and in fannish flux again. I began reading what little fanfic there is for The Pacific with Hoosier and then segued into Justified (which is Raylan/Tim for me). Who knows where I'll go next. Fannishly I'm generally a serial monogamist but I occasionally have bouts of extreme promiscuity when I'm trying to settle and that's where I am now.
I realized a while ago that I had missed the first two episodes of William Fitchner's new series Crossing Lines so I downloaded them. Since it comes on at the same time I watch Falling Skies that'll be something I continue to do. Covert Affairs returns next month and there'll be a new show called The Bridge that I'm interested in watching. Rizzoli & Isles is back along with Major Crimes and I'm enjoying the Scyfy show Defiance, mostly because of the interesting world-building and the intricate cultures they've come up with.
So, I think this is enough catch-up for my maiden return post. I need to get ready for work tomorrow and then Falling Skies comes on in less than an hour. I still want to write a crossover between Falling Skies and Teen Wolf. I think the aliens would find that werewolves couldn't be harnessed...but Stiles is grabbed before they figure out it's a workable defense for younger people. Hmmmm. I'll give it some thought.
Tah for now! I promise I'll be back soon.
