Like you, I have to have a fan or something to sleep. I have an air filter in the winter and fan in the summer. I also have one of those little white noise things that make natural sounds, but it doesn't run on batteries. I found out that I prefer the simple drone of a fan or filter over the imitation sounds, but in a pinch I'll use it especially if I'm traveling. Otherwise, I hear every little sound and it wakes me up.
The sound machine I have I got at Bed Bath & Beyond. The 'waterfall' actually sounds like a fan but I prefer the 'rain' setting for some reason. The rain forest, ocean beach and summer night all have distracting sounds in them and the 'heart beat' one (presumably for infants) just sounds freaky. What tipped my purchase toward this one was the cordless factor for occasions just like last night.
