I'm sitting in the very back room of my apartment looking out the back window at the lights of the San Francisco skyline poking up over and between the row of houses behind mine. Its not a view anyone would buy a postcard of but its reasonably nifty all the same (and the fog rolling in over the skyline is cool). But the big thing about this situation is that I haven't been able to even stand in this spot, much less sit and work on a computer, in a very long time (I'm really not sure how long).
The back room to my apartment is quite small, and was originally outside of the house. I don't know if it was a little deck that got enclosed or if it was added on during some sort of rebuilding of the back stairs (the door into it from the kitchen is pretty clearly original, and the window from the kitchen into the room is amusing :) (The kitchen also has its own larger window to the outside as it is wider than the back room).
Unfortunately, in my apartment it was never really finished so I mostly use it as storage, and it had become completely full of crap so that I could open the door but not really go in (and getting to the back door that leads down to the garden was out of the question). But this weekend, as part of my big cleanup effort since they're showing the house in order to sell it, I actually cleaned the thing out. About 1/3 is still used for storage, but now I can get to the back door, and I can also sit in front of this little shelf under the back window. Which is of the correct hight and more-or-less correct depth to hold my powerbook. It's nifty. I like looking out at the lights. :)
