The guy I dated for a few weeks a while back got me to create a facebook profile, and I was looking at it just now. Because it seemed like a better thing to do than actual work, I tried looking up who was on their from past places where I've worked.
It's interesting looking at the demographics of a site like facebook. The start-up I worked at two jobs ago isn't listed as a community. And as for the place I left at the end of last year... well, when I joined that place in April 2002, it had less than 200 people. I knew everyone in any technical position, and could at least recognize by name most of the rest of the company (engineering was half the company back then).
Of the 5 pages of people listed by facebook for that company, there was not a single person with whom I worked closely. There were quite a few I recognized as interns. And a few more who I knew of or had casual contact with, but that's it. This tells me two things:
1. Facebook really is weighted towards college students and recent grads.
2. Damn, has that company ever gotten big.
Very wierd. Not really surprising given that the percentage of people in the halls I could recognize was dropping rapidly by the time I left, but still. I was there when it was still possible to memorize the org chart without too much effort. It's wierd to see a whole population sample and not really know any of them.
