I read that Neil Gaiman once said that if he had to sum up Sandman in one sentence it would be: "The King of Dreams learns that he must change or die, and makes his choice". I think that's one of the best one-line summaries I've ever heard, and I love how that choice (death) was handled. There were several steps where he could clearly break one of his own rules in some small way and avoid death, but chose not to
