There is, quite literally, dancing in the street here. Even though we still have no idea what Prop 8 will do. But even if that goes poorly, it's a battle that's far from over, and there will be another step.
Far more importantly, we have really and truly turned the page. Hell, we closed a volume in the series, tossed it out, and opened up a new one. And not only did we break barriers of party and, amazingly, race, we elected the candidate who spoke of hope, of engaging the world, and so very sincerely about the power of the people to enact change.
And we took our country back. I listen to the right-wing members of certain comics-related mailing lists I'm on babble about their fears regarding an Obama administration, and I hear the past. I hear an increasingly isolated section of the population. I hear people who are deluded into thinking that Sarah Palin would make a great presidential candidate. And it gives me hope that the people responsible for the last eight years will continue to overreach until they are a near-powerless minority. And that whatever opposition party emerges from the wreckage will, at least for a while, be more reasonable.
Because we won't hold on to power forever. But this shift, I think, I hope, has been so strong, and so profound, that the center has moved. And for the next few decades, we'll orbit a far better position than where we've been for many, many years.
holy shit it really worked!,
