bleach fic: Irony
I wasn’t too comfortable posting this since I feel that it still lacks something. Apologies if I’m unable to stay faithful to some of the details. It has been too long since I watched the first few Bleach episodes. Anyway, here it is.

Irony
The day he was bound to leave for soul society, it bothered him a little when Isshin told him to “do what he needed to do”. His mind flashed back to the first time his father attacked him by surprise.
He had just entered the house when he received a punch to the stomach. It wasn’t forceful enough to damage his internal organs (as his father had diagnosed after the incident) but it did make him writhe in pain and prevented him from retaliating. Yuzu, who was preparing dinner, was shocked and ran to her brother’s side while Karin reprimanded her father for making Yuzu worry. But Isshin ignored his daughter and instead told Ichigo that he should not be vulnerable to weak attacks like that. The evening ended quietly with Isshin sporting a bruise on his face, courtesy of Karin’s soccer ball and Ichigo wondering if this was some sort of payback for his mother’s death.
The second time his father did it, he managed to dodge a kick, but a fist connected with his left cheek. He vowed to himself that he would not get hit the next time. But it wasn’t until a month afterwards that he was able to block his father’s attacks. And it took another two months before he was capable of fighting back. After sometime, it had turned into a routine of sorts and Karin would sometimes bet with Yuzu as to who would get hit first.
While it was a completely unnatural thing for a father to do, Ichigo admits that it did serve some purpose. Like that day he found Chad being beaten, or that incident where he first encountered a hollow. Or maybe all that training was a preparation for today and for all the times that a hollow had tried to kick his ass.
He wondered if Isshin knew who and what he had become even before he did. As he looked at his father, he saw a man who worshipped his wife’s poster, looked under his sister’s skirts and gets excited to watch shows like. Add to that the fact that he can’t even see nor sense spirits.
As Ichigo walked off to where the others were, he thought to himself, "He couldn’t possibly know".
His father was just his father after all.

1. “do what he needed to do” Not so sure if these were the words he said to Ichigo before he left to save Rukia (or if he said them at all). I don’t even remember what Ichigo’s excuse was. Was it a trip somewhere?
