Relating to Time

Time moves in a circle, doesn’t it? Or perhaps it was more like a roller coaster with its loop-de-loops going back to where it had been before but pushing forward at the end. Tony doesn’t feel as if his life has gone in a circle. Fear tells him that he is when he’s in the dumps. When he is as he is now, that fear remains, hovering in the shadows waiting for the moment to pounce. He doesn’t care right now. He’s too happy to care, and he’s a kind of happy he wants to be forever. It isn’t the blinding happiness he felt when he returned to Milliways with Michelle. It’s a…it’s a natural happiness, a happiness that sustains itself and doesn’t burn out from its own high energy.

Honestly, twenty-four hours ago he didn’t suspect he’d be proposing to Michelle after letting out his darkest secret. He thought they were headed towards the end again, back in a circle, but now he was certain they were walking together towards the future. There were things that he’d have to do differently now, of course. He’d have to look for psychological help. He’d have to find himself a better-paying job. Above all, he’d have to be honest with Michelle and not hide anything from her, no matter how painful it was. That was the only way their relationship would survive.

Tony looks at himself in the mirror. There are some dark circles under his eyes-he hadn’t gotten much sleep last night. Otherwise, he’s different than how he appeared twenty-four hours ago. Happier. More himself. He looks amusedly at his bare left hand and notes that there’s still something left to add before he’s more fully himself. It’s just the way things ought to be. He was hers and she was his and there wasn’t anything in the world that could change that.
