I love you, you know.
We've never met, but we've known each other for years, separated by the vastness of land yet connected by two modems and occasionally a telephone line. It's not a romantic love, this affection I feel for you, though there has been flirtation from time to time from either side. It's never really been like that, not for me and you.
It's through the strange lens of this connection that we've watched each other grow up, from petty squabbles amongst mutual 'friends' to the normal dramas and issues of our individual, ordinary lives. We've always believed differently, had faiths all our own, and different views on morality, but it's never come between us. We only touch the other's life softly, like a brush of insect wings. No real impact, but noted.
We're both going our own way now. Less online, more into what will be the meat of our lives. Building new connections, new memories. We will forget each other, maybe, as distant friends often do, the memories harder to come by as we've never stood face to face. We share no linked events, no common human connection.
But the conversations we've had, about anything and everything, I remember with a fuzzy sort of clarity. What I do recall was that you came to mean something to me, in your own way. Older now, and still figuring things out. I feel a gentle tug on my heart when I think of you, and a sort of sadness upon realizing that we'll probably never be as close as we could have been. We may never even speak to one another again.
But you were a part of my childhood, there in small ways as I finally discovered what it was I wanted from my life, and when I took those first clumsy steps towards what could be called my destiny. I don't like the thought of you not being there for the rest of my life, once or twice a year catching up with one another on some of the more petty trifles of our existence. I want to tell you about my future; my husband, my children, my grandchildren, though it's likely not meant to be. But I hope your life is as beautiful as you want it to be, and shows itself to have as much promise as I believe you have.
And I hope you don't forget me. I don't plan on forgetting you.
