Okay so there's a common misconception I see in a lot of stories about John and the boys using salt rounds in their shotguns in wee!chester fics. But if you recall in the pilot, Sam hadn't seen that before. So it's safe to assume Dean or John came up with this while Sam was away at college. Maybe. Hopefully. That's how I'm writing it anyway.
