Summary: Another episode in my Lae/Myde miniseries. In this episode: Lae gets a new toy and chaos ensues.
"Myde! Myde, Myde, Myde!" Lae half chanted, half screamed as he lept off his fromt porch, clearing the four steps and landing on his feet with ease. He coninued his mantra as he burst through the bushes, he had news and using the sidewalk would have just slowed him down. He quickly scaled the large tree in Myde's fromt yard, popping through the trap door befre grabbing the book Myde was reading and tossing it across the treehouse.
"Hey, what gives?" Myde exclaimed staring at the abused copy of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing in horror; that was a library book!
"You have to see what my dad bought me cause I didn't get in trouble at school for two whole weeks!" Even at eight years old, Lae had a knack for causing trouble in class simply because he couldn't sit still.
"But La, I have to do my book report," Myde complained, standing up and retrieving the much needed and loved book.
"Dad made me do mine last week. I read Goosebumps," Lae declared proudly as he tookk the book from Myde and looked at the cover. "You've read this book fifty bajallion times, you don't have to read it again," he insisted; it was too nice of a day for Myde to be stuck reading.
"I could do it later," he decided, lying the book carefully on the upside down milk crate he had been sitting on- Lae usually got his way eventually.
"Come on then!" Lae said, climbing down the ladder behind Myde. Lae grabbed Myde's hand, dragging the slightly smaller boy through the bushes and into his yard.
"Cool! A skateboard," Myde gushed as Lae displayed hs new toy proudly. "Isn't it awesome? Dad told me I couldn't have one cause they're too dangerous, but he got me one anyway," he explained as Myde took the skateboard from him, examining the shiny black and red paint job with a critical eye.
"Have you played with it yet?" he asked, handing the skateboard back to Lae.
"I managed to skate over to the bushes before coming to your house." He grinned and pointed to the short, but steep hill that made up the street that was in front of their houses. "I'm going to go down the hill," he declared, walking out into the street.
"Are you sure? I mean what if you get hurt?" Myde asked, this didn't seem like a good idea to him.
"Oh, come on Myde, don't be such a baby," Lae teased, lining the skateboard up in the center of the quiet street- it suddenly looked bigger and steeper than he remembered.
"I'm not a baby," Myde insisted, crossing his arms over his chest, surpressin the pout that he knew Lae loathed.
"Watch this!" Lae called out, pushing off with his foot before he lost his nerve.
Myde watched in horror, eyes wide in fear when Lae hit a patch of rough pavement and flew off the skateboard, tumbling down the hill. "LAE!" he yelled, racing down the hill to his unmoving friend.
"Did you see me?" Lae asked once Myde had reached him, trying to ignore the pain for the sake of his friend.
"Yeah, yeah I saw," Myde said, worried ny the blood that seemed to be everywhere. "I'm gonna go get your dad." When Lae didn't protest, Myde ran top speed toward Lae's house.
"Hey, where's the fire?" Reno asked with a laugh when Myde rushed into the house.
"Lae's hurt, he fell off his skateboard," Myde explained in a rush, breathless from his run up the hill.
"Where is he?" Reno asked, his face paling at the thought of his only child being seriously injured.
"He's at the bottom of the hill," Myde told him, following Renot out of the house and to where Lae was.
When they reached the bottom of the hill where the injured boy was, Lae had made it halfway up the hill, seemingly uanaware of his badly skinned knee and leg as he cradled his left arm to his chest. "My arm hurts," he said softly, blinking back tears at the sight of his father and his best friend.
Reno smiled reassuringly at at Lae and a worried looking Myde. "Come on Shorty, let's take a trip to the emergency room," he said, picking his son up easily and kissing the top of his head as he carried him up the hill.
Myde watched silently as Reno drove down the hill, unaware of the tears that were wetting his cheeks. He walked down the hill and picked up Lae's undamaged skateboard before slowly walking back to this house. He picked up his abandoned book, sitting beneath the tree in his yard so he could keep an eye out for Lae's return.
What seemed like hours later, a familiar black car pulled into Lae's driveway causing Myde to jump up and bound over. "Are you okay?" he asked, hugging his best friend tightly.
"I got a cool cast! Wanna sign it?" Lae asked brightly, showing off his red plaster covered left arm with a grin.
"Of course," Myde returned Lae's infectious grin, glad that he was okay. "Here," he said, handing the skateboard over.
Lae's grin widened and once Reno was out of earshot, leaned over to whisper in Myde's ear. "I can't wait to try that again!"
