In a small, but nice suburb if a large coastal city, a red-haired boy of about five was hiding behind a bush that was bigger than he was. Lae eyed the moving truck suspiciously from his hiding place as he watched the uniformed men carry furniture; the house next door had been empty for what seemed like forever to the child. A smile crossed his face when a small blonde boy got out of a blue care and walked toward Lae’s hiding place.

After a few moments of silent contemplation, Lae stepped out of the bushes and walked into his new neighbors yard. “Who are you?” he asked, poking the new kid in the shoulder.

The blonde’s eyes widened slightly at the sudden intrusion into his thoughts. “I-I’m Myde,” he said softly, looking at the other boy cautiously.

“I’m Lae,” he said with a grin, shaking Myde’s hand like his father had taught him. “So, wanna go see the beach?” he asked, practically bouncing in place as the two of them watched the movers.

“I have to ask my Mom,” Myde said, his face lighting up at the mention of one of his favorite places.

“It’s behind my house,” Lae pointed with a flourish as Myde looked around for his mom. “You ask your mom and I’ll go tell my dad. Come over when she says yes,” he said before running at top speed toward his house.

“Dad! Dad, Dad, Dad!” Lae yelled, slamming the screen door behind him as he ran into his house.

“I’ve changed my name, I no longer respond to Dad,” Reno said with a chuckle as he scooped up his hyperactive son.

“TheresanewkidnamedMydewhojustmovedinnextdoorandIwanttoshowhimtheceachcanwego?” he asked without taking a breath as he struggled to get away from his dad.

‘Whoa-slow down there. Try it again and breathe this time,” he said, tossing the struggling boy onto the couch.

“Da-ad,” Lae said with an exasperated sigh. “I said there’s a new kid next door named Myde and I want to show him the beach. Can we go? Please?” he asked, his eyes widening as he stared up at his father.

“Fine, just no water over here, okay?” he said, touching the middle of Lae’s shin as there was a soft knock on the door.

“Dad this is Myde. Come on, let’s go,” he said quickly after Reno had opened the door. Lae grabbed Myde’s hand and pulled him out the back door and across the large yard, not even pausing at the steps that led down to the beach.

“Wow, cool!” Myde exclaimed, stopping quickly as he stared at the small beach. “My house has it too!” he sad with a laugh as he pointed to his new backyard.

“Everyone has one silly,” Lae said, rolling his eyes as he kicked his flip flops off and waded into the ocean.
“What’s that?” Myde asked, pointing to the island in the distance.

“That’s the island. Dad and I go fishing there when he’s not working. He works a lot,” he said softly as Myde joined him in the warm water.

“My Dad does too, that’s why he doesn’t live with us anymore,” Myde said sadly, sitting down on the sand, allowing the small waves to lap at his bare feet.

“Wanna meet my Mom?” Lae asked after a few minutes of silence. When Myde nodded, Lae led him over to a palm tree near the steps. He knelt down and gently touched the cool granite memorial. “She died when I was born. Dad said he put her ashes all over the beach so she would always be here,” he explained, his eyes never leaving the memorial to the woman he had never met.

Myde hugged Lae tightly before pointing to one of the dates. “That’s my birthday, I’ll be six,” he said brightly, wanting his new friend to smile again.

Lae scowled at Myde, crossing his arms over his chest. “Nuh-uh, July 14th is my birthday. You can’t have the same birthday as me,” he insisted, neither of them noticing the two people that were standing on the steps.

“Think about it Shorty, if Myde has the same birthday it’ll mean a party that’s twice as big,” Reno informed him, alerting the boys to the presence of the adults.

“Really?” Lae asked, his eyes widening in excitement at the thought of a huge birthday party.

“We can have a big party?” Myde asked, running over to his Mom, hugging her leg as he looked up hopefully.
Aerith threw her hand up in defeat, laughing as she nodded. “Sure, I don’t see why not.”

“Yay!”

“Awesome!” Two simultaneous voices cheered, both of the boys already excited for a birthday that was two months away.

Reno and Aerith smiled at each other over their sons antics. They could tell that this was going to be the start of a long friendship; ah, to be young again.
