Borrowed the first three volumes of Fruits Basket from San Bookshop on Monday, and I think I'm hooked. Hee. It's an interesting premise: a girl meets a strange, isolated family that hides a peculiar curse. 12 members of the family are afflicted by the same thing: everytime they are stressed or are hugged by a member of the opposite sex, they transform into an animal from the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac. And then there's Kyo, the 13th.
(And in case you were wondering how come there's a 13th animal to all this, it's kind of a long story. The Chinese zodiac has this story about how the animals were invited to a banquet and the resulting zodiac order was determined by the order in which the animals arrived. The rat, the sneaky bastard, duped the cat into believing the banquet was a day later. Hence the missing animal, and resulting outcast from the traditional 12-animal Zodiac.)
With any decent story, it's not just one-sided fluff. There's a sinister side to this large and mysterious family, even as its members try to fight against the curse. And I really want to know what happens now. Heh. Right now, the series could end in complete disaster, and I'd still be reading all the way.
In addition, I didn't know Tomokazu Seki voices Kyo in the anime! *random fangirling* Even more reason to find the series...
