To be honest, I think that it's actually brave and realistic to portray Michael in a less positive light sometimes. Our protagonists can't all be heroes, and they shouldn't be. It was an uglier side of Michael, but it was a real one. My boss is remarkably like Michael, only without the endearing side, lol. He has said some horrible things to people and about cultures and groups of people.

I love that the episode exposes his flaws - it's honest. It's honest about what we expect from life and from relationships. As far as Michael was concerned, he wasn't saying anything wrong to his date, he didn't see how what he was saying could be construed as insulting because he has no censor. He has a ridiculous idealistic view of what he wants from his partner but then he expects the best of both worlds and he has yet to learn that you probably can't find someone who looks like Jan, will cause you no emotional distress and who "could just curl up on a couch" and plan a family with him.

I don't know, I just think it's real and it pushes boundaries, which is what you want from an award worthy show. It should be pushing and challenging perceptions on people and not just showing us their nicer sides. We all have a less than pleasant side and I'd rather see that than be fed an unrealistic ideal.

I do love seeing Michael's smart side, but I actually think that he'd be a disaster in NY. He's a phenomenal salesman, but as a manager he has no idea what he's doing. That's what I love about Traveling Salesman, actually. It shows you how he ended up in such an unsuitable position and how great he was as a salesman. Then in The Coup, he handles the situation successfully, but because he's dealing with Dwight, lol. That wouldn't have worked on anyone else because well, Dwight is just as socially inept as Michael. Lol.

I totally get not liking the episode, but I don't think it could be considered a bad choice, is what I'm trying to say. It's a stellar episode in terms of quality and a great showcase for what this show can do.

Oh I know, lol. It shows off Hugh's skillz and that's what they wanna do. He's their star ;)
