Dream Travels

A few days ago I was reading an article (this article in fact) about unusual human settlements. Whilst all are eyebrow-raising, Kowloon Walled City in particular caught my eye. I remember seeing an interview with the set designers for Batman Begins where they mentioned that the designs for The Narrows were based on Kowloon. At the time I wouldn't understand what they meant, since Kowloon is an impressive collection of gleaming spires and Asian industriousness. What they actually meant is that they based it on Kowloon Walled City, which suddenly made a lot more sense. In fact now it looked like a precise replica of that suffocating lightless nightmare. Suddenly I had identified the perfect place to become Batman and leap from building to building (to be fair they're less than a meter apart), brood in dark corners (essentially any corner), and not get immediately arrested by the police (because of its total lack of any law enforcement). Then I realised that it got torn down in the 90s, and now I'd be brooding around a lovely park, crouching in a bed of flowers, and beating up elderly citizens out for a stroll. It just isn't the same. Curses! So much of our society is decrepit, but the one time that that decrepitness is actually cool, they get rid of it.

Well anyway, I've been having dreams about the Walled City every night since in one way or another. It's been quite powerful actually, it's been a long time since something fired up my imagination like that. I subsequently watched a documentary on it, the first part of which can be seen here. It's pretty astonishing.

Speaking of Batman actually, filming was completed last month on the final movie in Nolan's trilogy. It's due for release this summer, and a trailer for the movie can be seen here. It being the last one (barring any return to Joel Schumacher-syle eye-watering idiocy) I've decided to get the full-on experience and go to an IMAX cinema in order to see it. The only problem is, Birmingham houses the nearest IMAX cinema to me. That will be a long day, and heaven help anyone who has to share the train back with me, because I'm likely to be thoroughly on edge after that experience. It'll be good though, I'm sure it'll shake me out of a little bit of disconnectedness that I'm currently feeling. I don't feel especially reachable at the moment. Nothing is upsetting me, but nothing is particularly exciting me either. I wonder if too much equilibrium is a bad thing.

Ah curses, I had plenty more to talk about, but as per usual I'm out of time. I'll carry on next time, though entries may need to get shorter and sharper soon, that's something else I'll talk about at my next ponderation.
