The sound of glass crashing down on the floor was heard from the dark room situated upstairs, followed by the echoes of a harsh slap and loud, heartbreaking sobs. A young man with soft, raven hair and contrasting pale skin sighed, and mumbled under his breath.
'Seems like it has started again,' Jaejoong thought. He wrapped his arms around his skinny legs on the floor beside his bed and sighed once more. He tried to look for something in his room to distract him for a while, but the lack of decor in his bedroom proved it to be a very difficult task. It was always like this. The screaming, the tears, the strangled cries, the begging. It was too painful to bear, and yet the seventeen year old boy could not bring himself to stop any of it. After all, what could he do since he wasn't even acknowledged in his own house?
Jaejoong was pretty much the product of a broken relationship. His parents didn't think of the consequences of having shameless, unprotected sex and jumped right at it like rabbits back when they were at some sort of camp with their work mates in their early twenties - well, that's what he has been told at least - so when his mother approached his father with news that she was pregnant, they agreed to get married for the sake of the child and because they both came from strict families, but who knew what fate had in store for them once the baby boy was a young child?
Both mother and father thought it would be easy breezy, but harsh reality struck them to the core. They realized they were just too different a little too late - when Jay was five years old. They were both infatuated by each other's appearances to even think about what the other really was deep inside.
For the first five years of Jaejoong's life, his parent's showered him with undying love. His father spoiled him excessively, and his mother handled him with extreme care as if she was afraid he would break at any moment. One look at the family, and you would have thought they were the happiest people in the world. Oh, how wrong you would be.
After five years of living under one roof, Mr Kim, the father, couldn't stand his wife. No, she wasn't rude or imprudent - by all means, she was almost perfect - but they could never agree on something together or make any decisions without her complaining about one thing or another. She was just too picky and demanding. The one thing Mr Kim hated was people who were picky, something he learned from his time staying with his 'wife'. He lost all self-control, and spilled everything to her face when they were having dinner when she refused to move houses. Not being able to let it slide, she snapped as well, but accidently confessed that she was seeing someone behind his back. Ever since then, this house was filled with nothing but anger, blame and depression.
Jaejoong then had to suffer the harsh treatment from his father, which he knew he didn't mean any of it - he would sometimes see the regret in his eyes after calling him rude names- but it still hurt him mentally. Jaejoong resembled his mother way too much, so his father would always see his 'wife' in the place of Jaejoong. Since the day he turned eight years-old, he started to shut himself away from family and school. He believed if love was what tore his family apart, he couldn't afford to let love tear him away from his friends.
After ten minutes of vicious words being spat at each other and that his father has indeed left the house for the night, Jaejoong went to check on his mother, silently opening his bedroom door and walking over to the staircase where his mother sat on the bottom step.
"Jaejoong... come here" his mother commanded softly when she felt her son’s presence at the top of the staircase. Jaejoong slightly jumped in surprise, but then again, his mother was always like that, well, in the past. He walked down towards his birth giver, but kept his distance once he sat down. His mother only smiled painfully and placed a hand on his thigh. She felt the younger boy tense, and unwillingly let her hand drop. The young man turned to look at her, and saw that her eyes were bloodshot while her cheeks were adorned with wet and dry tears. He's never seen her in such a state before, but he didn't know how to feel. He hasn't taken a good look at his parents for years. They did ignore him in the household.
She looked him straight in the eye and sighed, "I know your... f-father and I have been... you know… neglecting you for a while." Jaejoong wanted to scoff, more like for the past thirteen years but decided against it.
"But we still love you. It pains us... m-me to see you distance yourself from your family, Jae." The latter didn't say a word though. He hardly did anyway, so it wasn't much of a shock although his mother was disappointed. She knew this was the reaction she would get. It wasn't going to be all sunshine and rainbows. He wasn't going to suddenly open up to her, after all the pain he had to go through because of her relationship with his father, but it still hurt to see him like this. She truly believed she was anything but a mother. She took a deep breath, wiped her tears off her face and stood up and looked down at Jaejoong.
"I've got to finish some things for work, but I've left dinner on the table, just in case... you know, you get hungry. I'm leaving early tomorrow. Last minute printing," she tried to joke, but still received a blank expression from her sons face. She couldn't help but stare for a moment longer than intended. He had the same doe-like eyes, straight angled nose and high cheekbones, just like herself, giving him a very feminine look. His bow-shaped lips were from his father though, and also his determination and quick tongue. Mrs Kim shook her head as the memories of a sneaky little boy from years ago entered her mind. She reached down and ruffled the teenagers head, "Good night, Jae."
Once the young teenager made sure his mother was locked up in her office and that his father wasn't going to walk in anytime soon, a lone tear streaked down his cheek as he bit his lip as an attempt to stop anymore from flowing. His body started to tremble and he hesitantly started counting to ten. That was most affection he had received from his mother, let alone his parents, in the past nine years. He actually felt... loved.
