2012 Media Roundup - Around the Web

Dec 28, 2012 07:47

Hi all, so we've officially reached the last few days of the year which means it's time for one of my favorite routines... the yearly media roundup! So, expect a list a day from me until we reach 2013. For all of these, they were new to /me/ in 2012, not necessarily published then. First up...

Around the Web in 2012!

Usually this spot is exclusively fanfic recs but I did shockingly LITTLE fanfic reading this year- by my own standards at least. I've barely read any fic in the last six months! I just haven't really been fully in any one fandom this year, and the ones I've been interested in haven't had active fanfic fandoms, so. I don't know! I guess it's good to shake things up every once in a while.

That said, of course I've still got at least a handful of recs to mention- completed works only and rather long works only, it seems.

Fic

1 The Anatomist by rosa_acicularis Sherlock, Molly Hooper/Jim Moriarty). This is the very best fic I read this year. It absolutely blew me away. It posits that Molly and Moriarty are twins. That's all I'm going to say. Go into it blind.

The rest aren't in any particular order.

2 Antimony by jibrailis Inception, Arthur/Eames). I'll let the author summarize this: "Dreamshare goes legal, Arthur goes corporate, Eames goes and (against his better judgement) falls in love." It is satisfying and it is perfect.

3. And while we're on the subject of jibrailis, have an equally good but much less read piece by her The Red Country by jibrailis Alice in Wonderland, Red Queen/White Queen). I would actually argue strongly that this shouldn't be classified as fanfic. It's a wholly original prequel to Alice in Wonderland in which two Victorian boarding school girls open up another dimension

4 The Holmes Branch of Physics series by paxlux Sherlock, Mycroft/Sherlock). As much as I love Sherlock/John, my ultimate Sherlock ship is Mycroft/Sherlock, bc I apparently can never resist fraternal incest. And anything paxlux touches is golden. (While you're at it, go read everything else she's ever written in any fandom.)

5 Love Takes Hostages y scorpiod1 (The Vampire Diaries, Stefan/Damon/Elena). If we've got to pick sides, I'll always fall on Damon/Elena but my real OTP is S/D/E. This is the most perfect story telling that tale that I've found yet.

6 A Modest Proposal & its seque Involuntary Commitment y ignaz (House, House/Wilson.) If you're anything like me, then the final story arc of House is still a terrible, perfect, emotionally wrecking thing. Come, soothe your pain with some really satisfying House/Wilson dealing with House & Tritter (remember him?) & rehab, written well before anyone connected Wilson and six months left to live.

Moving on, as this is the Around the Web recs.

Web Series

If you haven't jumped on th Lizzie Bennet Diaries andwagon, there's no time like the present. I was dubious at first but, fellow skeptics, these are actually seriously fantastic. The characters feel real and charming and everyone involved is wonderfully committed to the project. It's just plain good storytelling, and wonderfully creative to boot

Less watched although equally deserving is the serie Awkward Black Girl n which our protagonist J attempts to navigate her perennially awkward life and learn a little bit about being comfortable in her own shoes to boot. Bonus points for a super PoC friendly cast!

Blogs

This list is totally exempt of fandom member blogs, because I'm not playing that game.

Sasha Stone's movie industry watch/Oscar blogging sit Awards Daily ffers intelligent discussion and critique of Hollywood and its products, often from a feminist perspective. (PS she led Team Social Network in the 2010 Oscar season of eventual heartbreak.)

On a similar note, Anita Sarkeesian o Feminist Frequency akes my prize for all around awesome internet person of the year. Girl's totally my hero. Immensely saavy feminist media critique and taking on cyberharassment to boot.

I read a lot of book/publishing industry blogs an thebooksmugglers s easily my favorite and I have them personally to blame for a large percentage of my TBR pile. They have awesome taste and great skills in intelligent criticism.

And finally Price Peterson gets a shout out for consistently making me laugh with hi Vampire Diaries photo recaps.

Feel free to recommend/discuss some of your fav. things around the web in 2012! And see y'all tomorrow to another slightly self indulgent discussion of my year in media..
