201. Gazing upon the sky with dampened eyes...

Blue Umbrella

The surrounding detail was overbearingly gray and dreary. No matter how thick the air seemed, it was in actuality a sharp coolness when inhaled. The same cloying moisture that clung to the leaves embraced her as well. It made her think that she belonged...

...When she knew, without a doubt, that she didn't.

The blur of pink and yellow danced amidst the drabness, both unaware that there were three, not two. It hurt. It always did.

As her lips tilted downward, she knew that her body had betrayed her inner wishes. The drizzle that started made her feel nothing but the dampness on her skin and the passive ache inside. Laughter broke the air, and a look at bright hair and flashing teeth made her eyes blur. It should have been her making him laugh. It should have been many things.

Instead, she was left to gaze solemnly into the dove sky, not really seeing what was there. The rain and the dulled colors around her weren't there. It was only pain and the bitter smell of salt.

Her milky orbs tore itself from the scenery in an abrupt manner, settling instead on her umbrella. Blue. It reminded her of him and the color of his eyes; the times when the sky was perfect and no rain fell. The downpour made puddles and she splashed through them with a broken smile and an even more broken heart. She could see why he'd always loved Sakura and not her, never her. Sakura was bright and Hinata was colorless, a mere shadow in the background. She knew that bright lights should always go together. Shadows only disappear.

The rain eased slowly and Hinata's anger faded with it. She should not become angry every time she watched them. It was her choice to follow them, they were none the wiser. They would not change their interactions just because she was standing by. She was the one that went on a walk every time it rained, and it just so happened that they did too. She sort of liked the emotion within her when she saw them together, but knew it was not healthy to have that type of pleasure. The raw anger and loathing was not a good thing, she never tried to convince herself otherwise.

But sometimes, Hinata did not get livid. Her eyes would become hazy and her blue umbrella would fall out of her hand and her dark hair would become matted in the rain. But she never noticed, because in her mind, it was her walking next to that boy, close enough to feel his heat. It was her and it was amazing.

She shuffled home, rain boots squelching beneath her. The puddles were tromped through steadily and her umbrella was strikingly blue against the gray backdrop.

And even though she hated it, Hinata smiled because it was meant to rain tomorrow.
