why mythologies are not all equal and cultural appropriation needs to be taught more

So, Patricia Briggs, an author whose work I enjoy, wrote a statement on using Native American culture in her work. Now, while I agree that Mercy's brand of Native American supernatural needed to be fleshed out and explained, there is a reason why I am really not looking forward to reading that book. Not only because of the cover, which decided to ( Read more... )

Oh, I like this line:

" Instead I bow my head in gratitude to those storytellers who have gone before and paved a way for me play in their stomping grounds."

Yup, us Natives are just here for you to muck about with whenever you want to, not like our culture is dying or anything. So happy we have you to teach it to the new generation! Wow, what would we do without you!

ANYWAYS, I just clicked on the link and shit I was actually curious about her work since it WAS female oriented and Native, which I find so freaking rare in media in general. Had it recommended to me too.

Now I really don't think I'm going to. Thanks Patricia but no, I'll be over here in my corner, trying to work out the language of my people that have been so systematically wiped out that older a select few Elders know anymore.

Have fun with your bastardization!

Now, the idea that Native American culture and traditions are in any way comparable to the white European culture and traditions she listed is- ridiculous ...

Why aren't they comparable, and in what way do they fail to be comparable? Are you arguing that the ancient white European traditions are much richer, or much poorer? If either, why?

Patricia Briggs, you do not, in any way, see that Native people, whose culture and traditions and people have been genocided and erased and forcibly wiped out will be legitimately offended by you taking their culture, no matter how 'respectful' your intent was?

What do genocides and erasures and forcible annihilations by other people have to do with Briggs? What about the forcible annihilation of pre-Christian European mythologies? Why doesn't this count?

You really think these people are going to be offended, not because you took something that is solely theirs (and it is, because it is the only thing they have for themselves,) ...

But it's not "solely theirs." No person or group of ( ... )

I'm going to ban you, but I'm sure you were aware of that when you decided to report this to a post on your lj and incite your buddies to come over and reply to me. I don't know exactly what offends you about this post, but I'll assume you're a Briggs fan and probably aren't aware of the workings of race, social privilege, racial privilege, or racism in general ( ... )

I find it hilarious that you're trying to tell someone (a native) that agrees with what Ivy says, that she's wrong.

As a native woman, I really think you and your friends need a better hobby than laughing over racism.
