I really need to stop watching Disney/Pixar films with the baby. I end up watching them over and over, and at some point I start analyzing them on a level that these films were never meant to be analyzed. Example one: On the fifty-somethingth rewatch of Cars, I came up with this:
Me: So this is a planet populated entirely by cars, trucks, vans, and other mechanical automobiles. We can assume that they have the lifespan of an average car and they die when they become to worn out to function, am I right?
Mom: Largely, yes, but I am concerned about where you're going with this.
Me: The rusty old cars that attend the Rust-eeze meeting and the two of them that run the company are supposed to be seen as old, uncool, probably even have parallels to real-life lower middle class-poor people. However, since most of them are rusting so badly that they are literally falling apart, it's more realistic to think of them as in the terminal stages of mechanical death.
Mom: ...
Me: So, when Lightning McQueen says: "I hate rusty old cars," what he's really saying is: "I hate cancer patients. This is not good for my image." Lightning McQueen is even MORE of a douchebag than I would have thought!
Mom: Maybe it's time we get the baby to watch something else with you.
And then, last night, while we were watching Monsters Inc, I was pondering the issues with a society that is totally cool with running off of the terror of children, while dehumanizing said children by spreading the lie that they're highly toxic and dangerous. The higher-ups (Waternoose, Gladys, possibly the CDA,) know that it's a lie, everyone else buys into it. They seem totally cool with blasting the hell out of anything child-related and it's implied they would have blasted Boo if she'd been in the restaurant zone. And she couldn't possibly be the only one that escape the room, so...murder of children, here. That's seriously dystopian.
That and me not being able to sympathize with Mike at all because he was totally willing to throw her into a home a continent away from her own as well as not caring if she got lost, captured by the CDA or Randall, and possibly killed/tortured by the scream device...yeah, I really started overthinking the hell out of that film.
Maybe I should stick with Nemo. I never have these problems with Nemo.
