Today was Quidditch! Fortunately I didn't plan anything big today because I thought we'd be getting snow. Turned out we had no snow, but a few kids were out sick and missed daycare. I had them all decorate house banners to hang from the ceiling in the 'great hall' to start out with.
Day Six: Quidditch
The kids all sit at the carpet underneath their house banners. Anyway, for Quidditch I merged houses Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, and also houses Gryffindor and Slytherin, since we didn't have enough children in each group to play Quidditch by house. I had everyone decide who they wanted in their team to be Seeker, Keeper, Chasers, or Beaters. One girl from Ravenclaw and one girl from Gryffindor got to be the Seekers! The Chasers scored the goals with the quaffle. The Beaters threw bludgers at people and tried to keep their team from getting hit by bludgers. The Keeper and the Seeker are pretty self-explanatory.
To play the game, I had a large red playground ball as the quaffle, three baskets for the 'hoops', three small, lightweight plastic balls as the 'bludgers', and a paper golden snitch that I hid in the classroom for the Seekers to find. I put all the bludgers in the middle and had the Chasers stand in a circle to catch the quaffle when I threw it.
The rules:
No hitting, shoving, or fighting. (of course)
Only the Chasers may score with the quaffle.
Neither the Beaters nor the Keeper need to be out when they're hit by a bludger.
If you are hit by a bludger, you are out for ten seconds.
Each goal is worth ten points.
The golden snitch is worth 150 points and ends the game.
They played this for about twenty minutes, each side scoring two goals. (This happened because the Chasers got confused about what they were supposed to be doing and the Beaters got overenthusiastic about throwing balls around.) Finally, Gryffindor/Slytherin's Seeker found the golden snitch and won the game!
Tomorrow, we do Herbology class.
