excuse me, what the actual fuck

So, apparently, some idiot Hetalia cosplayers thought it might be a good idea to perform a Nazi salute during their photo shoot in public, in front of a church, during Easter weekend, DURING PASSOVER AND MERE MILES AWAY FROM A HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL ( Read more... )

is this really happening?, fandom, crushing time now, probably wankbait, stop waving that privilege around, failboat

Here's the link to the post made to hetalia. Turns out that the massive majority of the fandom is PISSED OFF LIKE WHOA, which is heartening. But still, what kind of FUCKERY is this? I mean...WHOA. WHOA.

I'm so offended for so many reasons right now, I can't even comprehend why they'd even think this was sort-of a good idea to do this in public, or do it at all.

I mean, come on, that's a Nazi salute! There's nothing funny about it. There's no good reason why any one of those cosplayers should've done it whatsoever.

My grandmother fled Germany after having most of her family murdered. She was shot at, almost hunted down, and survived on grass during a long, long train ride through the country. I'm fucking enraged that these people have the indecency to use this as a petty in-joke for their little anime photo op.

I have no family members who can directly speak from experience, but I'm part German-Jew and half Polish. And a co-worker of mine that's somewhat a friend of mine is Jewish. Nazi jokes don't sit well with me, especially when these brats don't even realize what they're doing. They don't stop and think what it was like for people who actually lived through the Holocaust, let alone living in Germany at all in World War II. All they care about is getting a few chuckles at their *~edgy~* dark humor over some dumb show. (Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the show is okay, but it's really not worth making disgusting jokes like that, and I'm sure the fanbase doesn't appreciate it.)

Yeah, there are a couple of people in the thread thinking that everyone taking offense to this bullshit is being 'too sensitive'. That's. Shocking. The Holocaust wasn't too far away. We're talking actual living memory, here. People are alive who have concentration camp tattoos on their flesh. Elie Wiesel? Still hanging out, making speeches about his horrible experiences. Taking a part of such a horrific experience and using it for cheap laughs is just...reprehensible.

At least satires tend to point out the horror of the Holocaust and satirize the actual ridiculous points...like Hitler being vegetarian and the Aryan race quickly becoming inbred. These people are just tossing it around like it's cute. It's the equivalent of wearing a KKK outfit to symbolize America, people! It's. OFFENSIVE.

Honestly it depresses me that anyone would even try and defend why anyone would joke about Nazis. It's. It's not funny. There's no way you can defend a joke this tactless. Nobody's being 'too sensitive' if they're personally offended by the history that led to a genocide.

This only makes me wonder if any of them ever even seen the Holocaust victims with their own eyes. And then I wonder why they'd even have to see the images to truly realize it was an awful event that shouldn't have happened but it did. It shouldn't have happened, and someone should've stopped it before others joined in.

(In general, this post summed up my feelings well enough because all of my thoughts are completely all over the place.)

It's amazing. This is an event that we learn about in history almost every year, everyone knows about it. Everyone knows about the massacres and the genocide, and yet there are still people like these idiots. In Germany, they could be thrown in jail for shit like that. I really think we take 'freedom of speech' too far in this country.

The picture itself (which is linked in at least two of those many comments) has the first row of cosplayers looking pissed off or awkward to be in the shoot. Norway is facepalming, and one of the people (Germany) in the sieg hail line has a frozen smile and a thumbs-up sign instead of the salute. I feel sorry for some of the people stuck in that picture, since the internet leak means it'll haunt them for a while.

I really think we take 'freedom of speech' too far in this country.

I started thinking that as soon as I learned people protests at funerals with "God Hates Fags" signs. A line needs to be drawn somewhere; it needed to be drawn a long time ago, because clearly a lot of people take this personal freedom for granted, or use it to their advantage for situations like this.

I saw the picture. I loved facepalming Norway, but I'm a little surprised that there were no reports of anyone even attempting to vocally stop the photoshoot from happening as soon as someone saluted.

In one of the reports, it was said that some people in the crowd were applauding it and even chanting 'sieg hail'. Good GOD.

Norway's post says that the people in the front row didn't know that the people behind them were saluting until the ruckus was clear, they turned to look, and then it was too late. Photo taken. They left afterwards.

akljhakhjkalj. DOUBLE UGH FOREVER AND EVER. This is why I don't go to conventions: I hear stupid shit like this and it turns me off from even playing with the idea of attending.

Oh, that's good that they left instead of sticking around. :\ I feel bad for them that they were even caught in the picture at all. (I feel a little worst for the people in the back row who didn't want anything to do with the saluting but the others were trying to get them involved.)

Yeah, see, I go to conventions like mad and I've NEVER stumbled across anything of this level of offensive. Mostly they're full of happy funtimes. But...stuff like this. Stuff like this just turns my stomach. It's annoying that some people are like: "Well, that's what happens at a con." NO. NO THAT IS NOT. A CON IS NOT A CONVENIENT PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO ABANDON ALL DECENCY.

That post was very win. I can't come up with something coherent aside from screaming 'FUUUCK' right now- I blame it on the lack of sleep. There actually are quite a few really well-worded comments to that entry, and thankfully the fandom backlash for these people is huge. A bunch of them seem to be trying to organize regulations for cosplay.
