i have come with my mustard seed

This is for pimpypantsmcgee, for the association meme. She gave me:

Opinons: I am a very opiniated person. I often write out these opinions in essay form, rant form, or essay rant form on my LJ, because I can get to be a very verbose opiniated person. Most of my LJ opinions have to do with either writing or one of the fandoms I'm into at the moment, and then it's a lot of feminist criticism or just plain criticism. And sometimes I simply must rant about Penny and Aggie, the latest webcomic on a long list of webcomics that have done nothing but disappoint me. Meanwhile, I can think of a lot worse things than being known for having strong opinions. XD

Tori Amos: I love Tori's music. I was introduced to the concept of Tori Amos in sophomore year in high school, but hadn't actually listened to any of her music until senior year. And then, it was her album 'The Beekeeper', which immediately fixated me. I'd never heard a musician like her before, and her lyrics, which did take some getting used to, were also awesome in their fucked-up, symbolic way. Not to mention that Tori's music fills me with plot bunnies like no other artist does to this date. I still think The Beekeeper is my favorite of my Tori Amos CDs, and I listen to it frequently.

Privacy: I'm very careful about maintaining my privacy online, although I've recently loosened up on that a bit. I still don't typically maintain close online relationships, and it takes much longer for me to approach a 'friend' level with an online person. Which is interesting, since online people tend to interest me on the level of interests and debate more than the people I meet in real life tend to. The lack of face-to-face communication adds sort of an unreality to the interaction. That, and the fact that people online rarely discuss anything but online-related things and general RL issues such as politics, with very little personal information added.

Fandom: This probably goes right under opinions! I love fandom discussion. Sometimes it really helps when my fandom of choice has exploded into wank, or its fans have exploded into wank, or the show/manga/book fucks over a character I really love, yet again. I also just like to analyze things in general, from the psychology of fans and characters to common traits in literature and fanfic.

Feminism: This is the SECOND time someone has associated me with feminism. I must now proclaim myself as Ivy The Uber Feminist, Keeper of the Yonic Symbol of Wonder, whatever that may be, Avenger of Women's Rights, a shining symbol of equality and justice! I will forward the evil feminist agenda! FLY, MY PRETTIES, FLY, FLY!

On a more serious note, I think everything about me and feminism has been said in a lot of the journal entries I've made about the subject. I think the most crucial point at the moment, for me, is the clarification of what my stance on feminism actually is, and what feminism as an ideal actually means. I'm very tired of people automatically leaping to the assumption that feminist means 'blood belching man hating bulldyke'. Or just 'man-hater' in general. For some reason, I mention I'm a feminist, and people expect me to rain fire and brimstone from my mouth and castrate guys in my cellar as a hobby. It's about equality between the genders, not necessarily some fascist women-only regime.

Meanwhile, here's some fandom right now.

Fullmetal Alchemist:

I loved this chapter. I typically love every chapter of FMA, but this one was super win. I adored Olivia, as usual. Gun to her head and not an ounce of fear. And then of course she and her brother going: "OH GOD IF YOU DIE NOW THE INHERITANCE DOESN'T GO TO ME," "OF COURSE NOT, YOU WORM, IT GOES TO THE GUY WITH MORE SPINE," "OMG SO MEAN!" Hilarious. That family is so cracked out. Much like several families shown in this manga. Meanwhile, Olivia: gun pointed at her head, monsters attacking left and right, and she casually reasons with the gun-wielders until her control breaks and she just yells at them to use their freakin' skulls. I love this woman.

They killed Kimbley, and not a moment too soon. I know he's a popular villain, but I wasn't very fond of him. I did like the scene of Pride about to consume him. Very creepy, very cool. I really like the black ink homunculus effects in the manga. That and the many eyes. It reminds me of Alucard, really, which incidentally reminds me of Legion. Which adds to the intrinsic demonic nature of Pride/the homunculus in general.

And Roy saunters in and automatically annoys everyone in the room with his presence. I liked the sort of casual witty banter balanced on knife-edge tension of that scene. (Okay, I REALLY loved how Roy just snapped his fingers and wiped out the creepy critters in a move of: 'I am still more awesome than you, Fullmetal.") And finally, Maes Hughes' death will be avenged as Roy finally finds out who the killer is! Props to him for not getting distracted from the main goal. And cue badass fight scene with FIRE. I think I just automatically love fire-using characters. Zuko, Azula, Roy, Dustfinger...fire is just naturally cool.

xxx-Holic:

CLAMP. AUGH.

They wipe out Yuuko, the main source of awesome in the manga, and continue with the endlessly annoying plot of 'let's harass this poor woman, stalk her at her house, and attempt to shove food down her unwilling throat!' Do these people not realize how creepy that is? Do they not realize how utterly crazy that behavior is and how well within her rights that woman would be to call the police and issue a restraining order? I mean, I realize this is supposed to be somewhat symbolic, but I can't help being outraged on the behalf of a few of my online friends who have been stalked. It's scary. It's a violation of privacy, and it takes people out of their safety zone really quick. The fact that he goes straight to her home to bother her just makes it worse.

And the sheer, overwhelming arrogance involved in Watanuki's attempt to make this woman his personal project just bowls me right over. You should have just taught her to cook and left well enough alone, you nosy little jerk!
