Polytheistic religions tend to be centered around belief systems, philosophy, and the gaining of wisdom. Most monotheistic religions seem keen on keeping their adherents ignorant so they can control them better, and make no room for other religions or gods.

Roman Catholicism, from what I've seen, encourages debate in their youth groups and allows growth and development. Islam believes in Jesus as another prophet, if not the savior. Bahá'í believes in unity of religion and harmony between science and religion. Unitarians and Universalists, both monotheistic, share the same sort of tolerance and openness towards new ideas. Some Christians ditch Creationism for the Big Bang Theory. The church constantly adapts its scripture in accordance to changing data.
You may have had bad experiences with Christians in the past, but your experiences are not the whole of Christianity and the worst of a group shouldn't represent it in its entirety.
