Holy shit.

Bobby is my favorite person in the world right now. That scene with him and Dean--that's not even being Kripked, as a fandom. Being Kripked is writing the boys wrestling on a bed then seeing it in an episode. This... this was Jim sitting Blair down in season four and apologizing for being a dick in "Sentinel Too." This was Hercules telling Iolaus he values him. This was Methos and Duncan working out their issues after "Comes a Horseman." This was Arthur in the 2004 film apologizing to Lancelot for betraying the knights. This was John asking Rodney how he escaped in "The Hive."

This was the sort of emotional vindication of the undercurrents we all see that just never happens in a show, and I've stopped expecting it too. It's the absence of scenes like this in most TV and movies that drove me to write and read fanfic in the first place.

How many hundreds of writers have written how many thousands of pages just to bring Dean to a place where someone will say to him: "You're selling yourself short. You're worth more than that. They may not see it, but I do."

For the love of God! Bobby was saying everything I want to say to Dean!

From an in-show perspective, it shows that Bobby really loves the Winchesters. trakkie suggested he must have been a large part of their childhood, and I think she's probably right. And more than that, he sees what's really going on in the relationships between these three. John, Dean and Sam are all too close to it, but Bobby gets it, and he probably has for a long time. I think Sam buys Dean's facade; I don't think he'd have thought his brother was capable of this. But Bobby gets it immediately. He's mad, but he understands exactly what's going through Dean's head.

Eric, I'm telling you this now. If you kill Bobby, I will come to Hollywood myself and kick you in the head.

We've come a long way from "Han Solo and Luke Skywalker roadtrip across America in a muscle car, driving in and out of a different horror film each week." First season was a fairly standard episodic horror show with a side-helping of angst. Second season was angst, angst, angst and angst with a side-helping of supernatural--oh, and a few cops.

Next season, we can look forward too:
-Sam worrying that he came back wrong
-Dean worrying that Sam came back wrong
-Sam feeling guilty for being alive
-Dean worrying that he shouldn't have made the deal
-Sam worrying he might still go evil
-Dean worrying that he still might have to kill Sam
-Sam in deep denial, trying to "fix" this for Dean
-Dean being fatalistic and blocking Sam's attempts so Sam won't inadvertently kill himself
-Dean pretending like everything's fine
-Sam getting pissed at Dean not taking this seriously
-And the season finale...Dean's deal comes due

Oh, and some ghosts and something about a demon war.

This is going to be awesome.
