My theories as to why they think they are "getting away with it:"
1) They suffer from mild retardation and simply do not have the capacity to learn from the many times they've already been caught
2) They have lied so much, and had to defend their lies so strongly in order to make them sound convincing, they become incapable of distinguishing between reality and their own fabrications.
3) They are a completely selfish person with no regard for anyone else, and consider all relationships disposable and replaceable. For them, lying is easier because they don't feel there are any real consequences. If they lose a relationship, they figure they will just replace it.
4) They are such cowards who fear confrontation, they will sacrifice their integrity and reputation rather than take ownership of their actions and the responsibility that goes with that.
What they don't realize, is eventually their reputation will grow to such a degree that they can no longer escape it, and honest people will begin to weigh the value of any pleasure they derive from spending time with the liar against the risk and/or actual harm that is done from associating with a liar and decide that it isn't worth it. Even if the honest person isn't directly hurt by something the liar did, their reputation with others suffers because their own ethics are called into question for choosing to spend their time and energies with someone who has no regard for the truth and how bending or breaking it hurts others.
