Trip to the Biltmore Estate

Dec 17, 2008 16:54

As promised, here are the details surrounding and the pics supporting our very much needed Biltmore Getaway.

We each took off work early Friday evening and got going by 5pm headed to Asheville, only to have to turn around because yours truly forgot the damn camera. That happens when I get rattled, and I get rattled when I get rushed, and guess who was in fine form....anyway....on to the good stuff.

We arrived at the Cedar Crest Bed and Breakfast Inn in Asheville, around 8pm and checked in. This pic was
taken at night without the flash:

Then I bought us dinner at Texas Roadhouse where wizard3666  had prime rib and I bucked the habit of eating chicken and had a Ft Worth Ribeye myself.
Then we headed back to our cozy room.  Following are pics of the house and interior as well as our room.

Next morning, we were served the most delicious breakfast, mini belgian waffles, apple cake, fresh raspberries and blue berries and REAL cream...but I had to scoop off the sliced strawberries...being allergic and all that.  But the raspberries and blueberries were yummy.

wizard3666  took pictures of the mantel pieces in the house and a lot of the interior wood work.

here is a picture of the view into our room through the door,

and this is the coolest bathroom, it's actually in the tower you see in the picture of the house at the beginning of this entry.  A clawfoot tub...deep and wide enough for me, and I was in heaven.  It's been so long since I was able to have a nice long hot soak.  He laid there on the chaise lounge talking to me about this and that and making sure my every whim was catered to.

This is my payback for putting up with his uber-stressed self during this semester when his math class was kicking his ass.  He was gone all the time to get in his time at the math lab and grouchy when he did get home because it was so much harder than he thought it was going to be.   Math is the single reason why I have not returned to school.  Everything I am interested in would have me taking the more advanced math courses, and I just can't handle them.  Never could.  Learning disability in math, diagnosed at the same time my daughter's was...it's hereditary apparently.  Neither of my parents have it ...hmmm....

Anyway, after breakfast, we set off for the Biltmore Estate, the original target of our visit.
I wasn't so much interested in the candlelight tour.  Unless it's for ritual or I'm being all romantic, I don't care for candlelight because it makes my eyes hurt trying to see stuff.  So we went during the daytime.  The only glitch was they didn't tell you on the bus that the tours are timed durring the holiday season and we had to wait 3 1/2 hours for our tour to begin....so we walked the gardens.

Good gods!  If I hadn't been so entranced, I'd have been having real problems with the excess of it all.

Following are pics of the house and gardens:

Even the lions out front were decorated!!
As you have seen and will see more...the statuary is out of this world!

This...believe it or not...is WISTERIA!! The trunks of it are as big around a me..and that's saying something!
This is a walk with wisteria all over it. I can't wait to go back in the spring to see it. We upgraded to season passes so we will be doing that for sure!
And then, we went to the Conservatory....this is the view of it from the top of the hill from the walk:

I've got sooo much more....next up...pics from the Conservatory...an entry all its own!
