Another day with no time to read

Apr 14, 2005 19:59

Things continue as well as they have begun. Of late, I have been trying to read some of the books that my comrades in this society are from; it's slow going, because the others who occupy this space with me have different books that they want to read, and then our secretary insists on reading what SHE wants to read, and...

...and in the end, I have not made much progress into this first Westmark novel. Josua's trying to read Dracula (with only marginally more success than I have had), and the angel has actually made some progress into The Maltese Falcon (...I don't know why he chose that book, but he seems to enjoy it).

And then our secretary insists on continuing The Stone of Farewell, but Josua says that he hates to read about himself.

This entry was not intended to be all about books; nonetheless, this is what it seems to have turned into. Oh, still in the subject of books, my secretary (who is also trying to read Le Portrait de Dorian Gray in French; don't know why, as she hasn't even finished French 1 yet, and can only make out about 1/3 of the words) has warned us that we may need to make room for another soon. I'm rather excited about this thought - I do not know who she intends to bring in, as every time she considers someone they seem to be, in her words, "snapped up" by some other secretary, but I suspect someone from Westmark or Le Portrait de Dorian Gray...

Surely she wouldn't invite one of the people from The Maltese Falcon! They are all so... ill-mannered. (Although, in truth, so are most of the Westmarkians.)

Oh, and she also wonders if anyone has heard of a particular story, entitled 'Evening Primrose', by an author named John Collier? She insists that Mr. Collier is well-known, but seems to be largely incapable of locating the story she wishes to read in particular. She says, in fact: "If I had 30 dollars I'd buy that hardback antho, but wouldn't it be easier to only spend 7 dollars on the out of print one? If it was in print?" and then she goes on like that for some time. It's a trifle wearying.
