i had a pet cat this morning for about fifteen minutes. she was in my house.

it was awesome.

her name was riley, and she was a yellowy-orange shorthair who was supposedly deaf and did not want to sit still. she lapped up water from a bowl on the kitchen floor, got cat hair all over my bed and pajamas, and was just generally cute.

i saw her on the sidewalk when i parked my car last night, but she wouldn't come over to me. after i had dinner, i was about to go out back to have a smoke, and there she was on the back stoop, meowing and looking lonely and in want of attention. there was a phone number on her tag; i woke up my mother and asked her what i should do.

apparently riley had been hanging out behind our house in the heat of the day before my mother left for work. she was trying to curl up in a corner for shade and leaning against the garage, looking miserable. my mother took pity on her and gave her some water. [this is how my mother ended up adopting a marmalade stray in south bend years ago who became known as charlie, the family cat. the hypothesis on his appearance was that he had belonged to someone in the neighbourhood who committed suicide.]

six o'clock in the morning came around, and riley had found her way to the front porch, still complaining. my mother decided to call the number on her tag. riley had gotten away from someone in the condos down the street, and, according to her owner, pretty much never went outside, so my mother let her in until the owner arrived to pick her up.

needless to say, this got me out of bed in a hurry. she wandered all over the house and climbed up on the chair in the bathroom and was just freaking adorable. somehow, she had gotten her right front leg through her collar, and i was charged with the task of getting her to sit still while i fixed it.

gahhhhhh i want a cat. i'll probably be making friends with every stray in aix-en-provence.
