The Attorney General did not order a cover-up of a £1bn arms bribe allegedly made to a Saudi prince, the Serious Fraud Office has confirmed.
The SFO backed Lord Goldsmith's denial that he ordered British officials to hide details of the alleged payments by BAE Systems to secure a £40bn deal.
Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the former Saudi ambassador to the USA, is accused of pocketing the cash for the Al Yamamah deal in the 1980s.
The Ministry of Defence faces accusations that it knew about the secret payments.
And the Guardian newspaper accused Lord Goldsmith of a cover-up when a probe was launched.
He is accused of telling officials to withhold information from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) - the world's anti-corruption watchdog - earlier this year.

But the Director of the Serious Fraud Office said: "The Attorney General Lord Goldsmith gave no such orders.
"The decision as to what information should be given to the OECD about the investigation was made by the SFO.
"The information provided by the SFO was as full as possible, having regard to the need to protect national security."

Earlier, Lord Goldsmith said: "It is absolutely untrue that I ordered investigators to conceal payments from the OECD."
However he refused to discuss the allegations including claims that they continued after Labour came to power in 1997.
Prince Bandar has denied he received "kickbacks" of £120m a year.
He claims they were entirely lawful and part of the original deal.

Можно подумать, генпрокурору нужно всегда отдавать приказ. Не такие уж у него бестолковые подчиненые, чтобы не понять, что есть правильно для короны (на новоязе это - "защита национальной безопасности")
