I was going to provide a slew of captures from the movie to illustrate this post, but technical difficulties, followed by gamma oddness and me being lazy have kind of interfered with that idea, so I'll just yammer about it for a bit instead.
Today, in an act of shameless fanboyism and fiscal irresponsibility, I picked up the Lost in Translation DVD. This is a movie I had scene on its opening day, ages ago, and somewhat forgotten about, except that occasionally I'd remember it and go "you know, that was really good. I should see it again," but I never got around to doing so. IMDB claims that it's some odd drama/comedy/romance melange, and I can kind of go along with that. It's very low-key and accessible, the writing and acting are both very good, though far outshone by the cinematic beauty of the film. The Kyoto sequence in particular is absolutely gorgeous.
To sum things up: this is the best $23.09 that I've spent recently. The only complaint that I have is the fact that Universal crammed some annoyingly unskippable (but fast-forwardable) previews onto the disk before they let you at the main menu, which would be unforgivable if not for the fact that I love the movie so much. In spite of all the glowing praise I have for Return of the King, Lost in Translation is probably the best movie I've seen in the past year, and certainly a contender for my top 5 list. See it.
