Jun and Sho’s families always got together for the New Year’s holidays since they lived on opposite ends of Japan. Their mothers had been friends in college, and Jun’s family was happy to leave the colder, rural Hokkaido and fly south to Kyushu’s largest city, Fukuoka, for a few days. Of course Sho and Jun would share a bed, because both of them had been cursed (or was it blessed?) as the only boys in their families. Sho was usually not overly excited about this, but this year was different. He himself had not had a girlfriend for three years, and was starting to get slightly lonely. Jun’s girlfriend of two and a half years was threatening to break up with him, although he was in complete denial. All of this made Sho look forward to sleeping with Jun a little more than usual.

Sho had nothing more on his mind when he and Jun got in bed other than that he wanted to cuddle with Jun. He really had not planned anything out, he just wanted to perhaps talk Jun into it and hope they ended up together.

“Is that pillow gonna be alright for you?” Sho asked Jun once the lights were out.

“It’s not made of feathers is it? I’m allergic to feathers.” Jun was being serious, but Sho laughed because he was expecting no complaints.

“I... don’t think so. It’s not heavy enough to be. Do you want this one in case?”

“No, I’ll be fine.” Jun rolled over, away from Sho. This is gonna be harder than I thought. He decided to lie down and see if Jun would keep talking. “It’s awfully bright out for night time, isn’t it.” Jun sighed.

“You want me to shut the blinds? Here--” Sho jumped up and shut them without waiting for a response from the younger boy. He crawled back in bed facing Jun, trying place himself closer to him without being obvious. To Sho’s surprise, Jun rolled over to face him, arm tucked under his head.

“Do you like living in the city?” Sho was not expecting this question at all, so he was dumbfounded for a minute before he finally answered.

“Yeah, it’s okay. It’s never quiet, that’s for sure.” Jun just sighed again.

“My girlfriend says she wants to break up with me and move to Sapporo, that the country is too quiet for her. I can’t really stand all the lights and sound for too long, but for her, it’s exactly the opposite. I don’t know what to do.”

Sho blinked a few times before responding. “You should just let her go if you really don’t like the city. I’m sure there’s a girl out there who likes the country side. It’s not all that bad.” Sho had only been to Hokkaido a few times, and each time it was like a breath of fresh air from the city life he knew.

“It’s just, I thought we were going to get married after we graduated college next year! I’ve never wanted to spend my life with any girl besides her.” The quiver in Jun’s voice was unmistakable.

“There are other fish in the sea, trust me,” Sho answered with the slightest hint of snicker in his voice.

“You’re not doing so hot there yourself, Sho.” Of course Jun was right, and Sho knew it.

“I don’t really need a girlfriend now. They just cause trouble anyway. Maybe once I graduate this year and after I get a good job and move out, I’ll think about it. But not right now.” Jun just sighed. “You should do the same if she doesn’t even want to live in the same place as you. Think of all the things you could do if you were single.” Sho could see a scowl forming on Jun’s face in the dim light. His plan was not working at all. After a very long silence, Sho finally heard Jun’s voice, sounding very much like delicate glass.

“Do you know how lonely I’ll be, Sho? She’s everything to me.”

“I’m lonely now, Jun, and it’s not that bad,” Sho said in a slightly husky voice. He could see the tears in Jun’s eyes reflect the small amount of light that the blinds let in the room. Without wasting another minute, he had the younger boy in an embrace. Jun immediately started crying softly, and Sho made shushing noises at him as he rubbed his back. This only made the Jun start crying harder and put his arms around Sho.

Sho continued to shush Jun, and finally spoke into Jun’s ear, “I’m not going to say it will be easy, because it’s not. But if you want to talk to me about anything ever, you just tell me. I’ve been through my share of break-ups, and even though I still don’t know the best way to get over them, you can still talk to me.” Jun sniffled and snuggled closer to Sho.

“Thanks. I really want to stay with her, but I know it will never work. But I’ll let you know if I need to talk.” He choked back a sob and tugged at Sho’s shirt. Sho could think of nothing better to do than to lower his lips to Jun’s. The younger boy opened his eyes wide at first, but ended up giving in. The two took their time, making it slow and sweet. Sho did not want to rush it or make it extremely involved because they were pretty good friends and he did not want to mess anything up. Also, he had just told Jun about all the pretty girls out there, which might be slightly contradictory if anything happened. Finally, he released Jun’s mouth and was surprised to be out of breath.

“I’m sorry Jun, I was just-”

“Don’t worry about it. We’re both lonely and sad, and it was only natural.” Jun smirked a bit. “And we’re both tired. The mind can be a tricky thing when you’re sleepy.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Sho began to wonder if this was such a good idea, sleeping with his friend like this. Jun did not seem to have any objections, and sighed into his shoulder.

They eventually fell asleep like that, one holding onto the other, closer than they had been in years.
