"True, but..." Yuffie had no argument ready against the ever-right Vincent. BioFuse was nothing like AVALANCHE used to be, but was that it for them? A has-been was not something Yuffie ever wanted to be labeled as. "Hey Red, wait up!" Her strides lengthened in an attempt to keep up with the beast while remaining near Vincent, desperate to keep them together. "Maybe BioFuse can't take care of it, but we still can." Determination had made up her mind for her, and possibly for the rest of them if she had anything to do with it.
"We're still AVALANCHE, aren't we?" Somehow she was beginning to feel as if they were falling apart, despite her attempts to always keep the group together. Her constant visits and phone calls didn't seem to help and it bothered Yuffie to think they didn't want to remain as the strange family they had become. Or maybe she was the only one that felt that way.
"So even if BioFuse isn't strong enough to do anything, that just gives us more room to save the world again!" A light blush coloured her cheeks at the realization of the short lecture and Yuffie suddenly settled down. "...Right?"
Nanaki stopped. The fire had risen high enough. The fog billowed around him as he turned to face the two, and party blocking their path.
"Is that what you think we should be doing? Fighting drugs? DO you think we can 'save the world' but getting rid of such a material problem? That is not the heart of it. It's the weak will of humans that lies at the heart of all this, too soft to deal with the opportunities that both AVALANCHE and Gaia have given them." He was locked onto Yuffie the entire time, the air around him burning and pulsing.
He then rounded on Vincent. "Or shall we simply fade into obscurity? Leave the world to deal with its problems? We did our duty, so that is it? AVALANCHE fades into redundancy as humans just find a new way to ruin the world that we cannot deal with, and still they try to heal the wounds. I, for one, will not willingly become just some single page in the book of history." Nanaki's fire calmed slightly after his outburst. It was unlike him to be so vocal, or even to scold his friends in such a way. He was left both angry at his friends of their points of view, at himself for losing control, and confused. Why was he acting like this? He let silence eat his anger away, until they were but embers, and left only with regret and dilemma.
Vincent surpressed a start as the firebeast suddenly rounded on them, halting in his steps. He gazed at Nanaki calmly, eyes narrowing only in the slightest of fashions while he spoke. Nanaki was not human - Vincent never disillusioned himself into believing so - but he had never taken into account of the way another species might view the race. His words brought concern for both the source of them at the beast himself, but he remained quiet as the fire dimmed from its flare.
From Nanaki, he felt that the creature believed that humans were becoming the Sephiroth that they had battled before. Yes, Sephiroth was a human - Lucrecia's son, mortal when born, subject to experiments that made him above everyone else. In essence, not unlike Cloud and himself, though for lack of mind. So, what did Nanaki want, in his youth? Grandeur? World peace? Vincent couldn't imagine himself in Nanaki's place and didn't attempt to, but what had brought these thoughts to their full feverence?
Yet still, he said nothing, gazing quietly at the other, eyes glowing soft crimson in the darkness around them.
Yuffie came to an abrupt halt, arms windmilling to regain her balance. The girl even managed to take a step back from Nanaki, shocked that she had even been able to anger him like this. A worried expression fell across her features and Yuffie bit down on her lower lip, trying not to let the shame of a child show through her eyes. The scolding quieted and she soon realized he had finished with the both of them, yet the ninja was still feeling like a kid caught with her hand in the cookie jar.
The following silence made her fidgety and Yuffie shifted her weight from one leg to the other and then back. "Ah... well..." She started softly, clearing her throat to remedy the sudden timid tone. "It's better than doing nothing at all."
Taking in a deep breath, Yuffie quickly pulled the hood of her cloak up and over her head. "My place is that way," she pointed in the general direction of what she called 'home sweet home' while flashing a grin that betrayed her feelings to the very core. "I'll run into you guys later, I'm sure," she concluded, retreating from the pair to return to her personal safe haven.
Seeing Yuffie almost flee from Nanaki, he began to realise the situation he was in. In his mind he could see himself drifting away from the group into a dark place. Despite all the years he had been in the world, he could not help but look back into the darkness, and see a horrible glimmer of what he might become if kept walking down this path. Yet he also saw no other path, unwilling, as he was, to look back and see his friends.
"I...have things to think about." Nanaki turned away from Vincent. As he turned, something seemed to flash in Vincent's eyes. A brilliant blue. Nanaki flinched noticeably and froze, looking out of the corner of his eye at Vincent. "Perhaps I shall...speak to you at a later date...Vincent." With that, Nanaki bounded onto a nearby roof and into the fog, leaving Vincent alone once more.
Vincent emitted a soft noise, but it formed no syllable as Nanaki jumped onto the roof, glancing over to the area where Yuffie had disappeared as well. His eyebrows drew together in a frown, folding his arms over his chest and pushing down the cold feeling within. A sudden departure from both of his companions, and he was left alone in the midst of the road, fog rolling about his feet.
What Nanaki had said began to wind in his stomach. Was he content to merely fade in the distance? He supposed it was inevitable - eventually the others would fade away in life, and he would be left on his own. The emptiness in the street mimicked his future, some eighty or more years. Not liking the way the thoughts felt in his core, he shoved them within the depths of his mind, uncrossing his arms.
He pushed the tatters of his red cloak behind him before continuing on, the thud of his metal boots the only sound to his ears in the too-quiet evening.
