Cloud pushed open the back door to allow the stampede of feet to enter the home again. He shifted his weight to the side as Denzel’s backpack threatened to hit his thigh on the rush by as the boy chased after Marlene. He didn’t remember being this excited coming home from school… ever.

He stepped in after the pair and shut the door behind him, picking up their carelessly discarded shoes and putting them away appropriately. He followed the brief line to where Marlene’s jacket had fallen from the chair back that she had intended to place it on, taking the jacket back to the closet and hanging it up. He then entered to kitchen to find the pair making afternoon snacks cheerfully.

“Finish up there and start on your homework,” he murmured as he walked passed them.

He smiled subtly at the cheerful chorus of “we will!” They were always good about getting things done in time before dinner.

“Hey Cloud, can we practice tonight?”

Cloud slowly turned to regard Denzel whose eagerness had grown since the loss of geostigma. He reached out and laid a hand on top of the boy’s head, giving it a playful ruffle. He closed his eyes, remembering that feeling himself, the way that Zack had once playfully ruffled his hair in that SOLDIERly way of friendship.

He sighed a little, looking down at the brunette and nodding. “Yeah… if you get all your work done, we can do a little practice tonight after dinner.” He lifted his hand and Denzel left contented with an afternoon snack and a backpack full of books, heading after Marlene up the stairs. “If you need help, call you two.”

“Alright,” Denzel called back.

“Why can’t Aerith help, Cloud?” That had been fun to explain.

“She needs some time off, Marlene. You can bug Aerith about your homework later,” Cloud called. His tone left no room for argument as he ascended the stairs and into his office.

As he was checking messages, he could hear the pair settling in to do their homework. He was pretty sure they would be fine on their own unless stumped on a question. That meant he could safely jought down some notes from his messages. His eyes drifted over to the paper with hurried writing on it, finding his gaze lingering there before he picked up the paper and put it in his top drawer. He would deal with that later.
