Not two days ago I talked with someone about Never Let Me Go. I was playing the part of someone who read the book and the other person... is irrelevant.
I didn't read the book. I never planned on reading the book as wikipedia entry was enough to drive me to tears. Just like Animatrix did. Like Land of the Dead would if it was better of a movie.
I can see problems I do not want to deal with in my lifetime. Cloning, "Splice-ing", Artifical Intelligence, "non-human live forms" in all shapes and sizes... And no, I'm not against progress, hell no. If I could live besides intelligent robots, even robots just programmed to think they are intelligent, that would be awesome of cosmic proportions. What I don't want is having to listen to people argue about it.
We, as a species, can not deal with ourselves in honorable fashion, cannot deal with animals in decent fashion and we want to try our hands in dealing with artificial life? Extraterrestrial life? Mechanical life?
I include cloning into "dealing with ourselves" realm of course. It's a disaster waiting to happen and I think we all know it. Screw Never Let Me Go, I haven't read it and don't actually plan to, I can see all the shit that can go down all by myself.
I'm also aware for me, giving an opinnion on the matter is easier as I don't have to take god into cosideration. Life is not given, it happens, just like lightening happens. We managed artifical lightenig without much ado, and my take on artifical live is exactly the same. So I? Just don't have a problem. Will not have a problem. But there is *Entire World* full of people who will. Who think they are not a happenestance, who think they are a part of a plan. Who knows, maybe they are, but for me? That does not change facts.
I do not want to live in a world where we discuss whether or not something that can think is to be considered alive and thus is owed basic rights and freedoms.
Also, we know what's coming. There was Skynet, there was a lot of stuff like "I, Robot". Intellectually we see. But so what? I can intellectually see being fat is bad for me, does not mean I will do anything about it.
ps. Wow In my own post I compared live to electricity... Interesting times could be very fascinating indeed. Also Nietzsche was right.
