20.3. Confront

[Follows THIS]

“Jason.”

There was no hesitation in Jason turning around in his chair at the voice. A frown was already sweeping across his features as his palm brushed across the wheels of the chair to turn him. “What are you doing here?” he asked, the accusation loud and clear in the hushed words. He moved closer to her, looking up at her. “Lyla, you can’t just show up like this. Who even told you he was here?”

Lyla pursed her lips slightly and pushed her hair over her shoulders. “He’s my friend, Jason. Just because we broke up doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. I thought you would understand that better than anyone,” she said, glancing behind her to make sure no one was listening in to the conversation. “Coach Taylor told my Dad, not that it matters.”

Jason shook his head. “It fucking matters, Lyla. What doesn’t matter is the friendship thing you’re spinning me here. You and I hardly remained best friends after you slept around on me, did we? We hardly even speak anymore so don’t feed me the friends line. I’m over it. You knew Sam would be here. You’ve just come to cause shit and if you were any friend of Tim’s you would realise that right now anymore shit is probably the last thing he needs. Why now? Why not in a couple of days when the shit has settled and he’s feeling better? You aren’t the girlfriend anymore, Lyla. You might’ve had that irritating burden of obligation to me when I was in here, but Tim’s with Sam now. Sam.”

“She can’t stop me being his friend, Jason,” Lyla bit out, the mention of Sam’s name clearly aggravating her. “She’s only with him because I’m not. She wouldn’t have had a damn chance if I wasn’t going away to Vanderbilt. I’m the one he wants. Always have been,” she said smugly.

Jason’s eyes narrowed. “Are you here to try and get him back?” he demanded. He gave a slight, disbelieving laugh. “You’re unbelievable. You really think you can just snap your fingers and he’ll come running back. You only want him back because Sam’s with him now. Is there anyone’s life you don’t want to ruin? He’s happy with Sam, Lyla. Is happiness even a concept you understand?”

“What do you care? You’ve got the cop to play with now. The cop who can’t even do her job well enough to prevent herself getting attacked by a petty criminal,” Lyla snorted, rolling her eyes with a hint of disdain. “You two will make a nice pair.”

Jason lips turned into a smirk of disgust. “At least she knows how to satisfy a guy,” he threw back, not faltering in the eye contact. “Which is more than I can say for some.”

“You were impossible to satisfy, Jason,” Lyla said blandly. “Why do you think I went looking for a real man?”

Jason was actually surprised when the comment didn’t come like a slap in the face. It just washed over him as if she had just made a comment on the weather. All he did was shake his head and wheel a few paces back from her. “Just leave, Lyla. No one wants you here, especially not Tim.” He pushed past her out of the waiting room and didn’t look back. He probably would never look back to Lyla Garrity again.
