[ A little reverse trap crusader is sitting on the grass in the park with a small pile of books surrounding her. They are written for someone younger than she is-lots of full-color illustrations, not much writing-with titles like "A picture history of the 20th century" and "Learning about Europe ( Read more... )

[Daine spots the books and walks over, seeing a bit of disappointment.]

Did you get those from the library?

Yeah. And they're totally useless. I wanted real books.

Well, if you need some helpful ones, there's a trick to getting them. Like, I can't get any ones about animal anatomy by myself.

So... what's the trick?

[She looks around- it's probably not a good idea to broadcast this to everyone.]

You find one of the...well, what they call adults here, but I don't see why they're so adult. And then ask them to get the books for you. Mr. Snicket helps me get mine.

...

[ She doesn't get how that's such a secret. Actually, it seems kind of obvious (if... annoying. Ugh.)]

Can I just ask Kiku?-Uh, my "dad."

[Daine's kind of oblivious to these thoughts. Well, most things really.]

I suppose. I've never had a real Da about in the house until just a few days ago.

He's not my dad. That's just what the weird people here say. I have a brother, too.

Well, I don't really have a Da, of course. But here I have a Da and a brother as well.

Same. I don't have any family at all.

Me neither. My Ma and Grandda died a long time ago, and I never had a Da.

Though my friends are almost the same thing, usually.

I don't really have a lot of allies, either. So are you in a convent or something?

[Wait, what's a convent? You get a look.]

No, I live in Tortall.

...convent?

Well, you're an orphaned woman.

I've never heard of convents before. What are they?

...and I'm not orphaned, I've got good friends that look after me.

But you're unmarried, and without family. That's why you'd be in a convent. You know, you live in a place of God because you don't belong anywhere else.
