1. Today's A Softer World was photographed at the University of Toronto. I know this because I recognise it as the path I used to walk down to get to my film class. It's the path I was walking down the first day it started to properly snow.
2. I saw Wolverine yesterday with Mum. I had fun! It is by no means a paradigm of high-cinema, nor a film that is brimming with good story, neat plot and all-round quality. What it does have is very good special effects, fun camoes, a lot of fan-service and enough fandom-fodder to make me happy and eager to wait for the good link-fics to start popping up. That was my non-spoilery summer.
I liked Gambit's role, and also some of the other bit characters, Bolt, Blob, Wraith, Agent X and Deadpool. I felt that for a movie that was so keen on precision (everyone needed to be better-- all of the mutations had to do with someone being the fastest or the quickest or the most exact, and then Wolverine's metal claws-- a sharpening and refining of his already raw power) there were too many bits of the plot that got by on approximations and flimsy explanations or motivations. I also don't think that the development (or erosion) of the Wolverine-Sabretooth relationship was delved into enough for me to really care much about anything that happened to either of them.
It could've been a much better movie if they'd gotten a script-doctor who added that extra layer to everything. The movie needed some substance to underpin the action, which is what X1 and X2 (and Iron Man and The Dark Knight) had in abundance. Even though this movie was more about Wolverine's journey towards X1 and the following movies, they could've explored it a lot better.
I also came out with a desire to watch something where Hugh Jackman shows he can act. He did okay with what he was given, but it could've been so much better had they had that extra layer of complexity I mentioned above. Iron Man showed you can do a complex character study on screen and still keep the action. I'm thinking I'll buy The Fountain and watch that to see him break out his acting chops.. I loved that movie. And he just breaks my heart in it.
Gambit, however, was awesome. I love his little Cajun heart!
3. I woke up early this morning to start Boot Camp/Group Training with Nick Pappas and Nick Reich in the Botanical Gardens. Lordy that was hard. Peter, the guy who runs things, is very good and the group size isn't too intimidating. I didn't feel like I was too behind despite being clearly the most un-fit participant. I did have to stop at one point because I was feeling really queasy. Apparently it has something to do with too much lactic acid being released from my muscles and depositing itself in my stomach, which I am about to go Google once I've finished this post.
