Being a Blazer

Discrimination.

There is discrimination among races, among handicaps, among sexual orientation and there is discrimination for social status.

Now, if you know me, you know I am a very laid back and accepting person. I dont show disrespect to anyone unless they show disrespect to me. Actually, i even show respect when someone is disrespectful.

Yesterday, my dance class took a trip to see the National Ballet's Romeo and Juliet. All of us showed up in our little grey skirts, knee highs, sailor blouses and burgundy blazers.
Needless to say, we were anything but "blended in"

Going to a girl's private school, there is uneasiness whenever we wear the uniform in public. It's a big fat label that says " I Go To Private School" or " My Parents Are Loaded"

My parents are neither loaded, nor particularly involved in my life here at school, so why was I sneered at?

Since it was the "student's matinee" of the showing, it was nothing but us (the blazers) and them (public school kids). I didnt really have a lot of comments from any of the guys. But god damn, these rugged, pierced, peroxide blonde girls really really got to me.

There is a set of rules when you go to a theatre (especially the NATIONAL THEATRE)
1. YOU DONT FUCKING TALK (and if you do, you whisper)
2. You dont hoot and hollar as if you were at a RODEO while there is still MOTION on stage
3. Dont throw shit.
4. DONT FUCKING TALK

3 or 4 times I turned around and politley asked these girls to be quiet.
They were throwing pennies and dimes at me the rest of the show.

Instead of clawing their faces out, I kept composure and just walked by them.

It got to the point that my whole row was turning around literally telling these girls to shut it. Not only did they flat out DENY it, they were making threats behind out backs, begging us to pick a fight.
OH man did I want to, they ruined an experience I otherwise would have adored.

Anyways.
It just didnt make sense. If i hadnt shown up in that stupid uniform, this may not have happened. I may not have been demeaned and have pennies thrown at me. This kind of jugement is the kind that makes me sick.

I dont have a superiority complex (maybe a Napoleonic-one, Chris) but I dont think I am better than anyone because of the school I go to, because of the Uniform i wear or because of the label on my forehead.

I dont think I would have juged these girls the way I did had they not shown me what they were really like . It all pisses me off so.

With love,
Alex
