[Maya startles, but is grinning when she turns around to face him.]

You'd better watch it with all this sneaking up on me you do! Especially if I'm at the diner. I could be carrying a pot of coffee, and you could be wearing it.

"Hey, guy flies by and sees a pretty girl, its best not to dive bomb her."

I appreciate the lack of dive-bombing. I might have retaliated, and that wouldn't have been pretty, even if I don't have superpowers.

[She crosses her arms as she regards him with a smile.]

What have you been up to lately?

"Mostly getting used to the ring again, and trying to be seen so people don't just ASSUME that everyone is a Green Lantern. You know.. How about you?"

What's a 'Green Lantern'? [Maya raises an eyebrow with interest.]

I'm alright! The life of a waitress is very glamorous, you know. I expect to be asked to sign autographs any day now. I have a pretty full house, though, so I can't let my inevitable stardom get in the way of looking after my family.

[He grumbles a bit]

"Green lanterns are a bunch of guys from outer space in the industry that think they're better than everyone else and most people believe them."

"And if I remember right, you said you were a writer and last I checked the news here kind of sucks. I bet if we had reliable information you would be getting those autograph requests."

[Aw. She didn't mean to bring you down, Mike.]

They sound like jerks. Just keep proving them wrong, people will eventually see the truth. Actions speak louder than words and all that. Most of the time.

[She smiles.] If there was much to write about here, I'd love to do some reporting, though I can't do a newspaper all by myself. Maybe I could fine the time to write up a bulletin, though, after certain incidents. Even when the town seems quiet, the motto of a reporter is that there's always something going on. The question is, would people want to read it?

"The thing is.. Jerks or not.. They really are that good, unless one of them goes nuts and takes out a coast, which hasn't happened in a while, but its happened."

"As for reading something with real information. I'm not much of a reader myself, but anything is better than hearing about Little Lucy winning the spelling bee or how perfect the weather is expected to be."

That doesn't mean you can't be just as good, right?

[She taps her index finger against her chin, considering.]

I wonder how the folks in charge would react if I started writing openly about what goes on here.

"Its uh.. Complicated given what I do back home... But yeah!"

"I dunno how they'd react, but I think the people would appreciate it and stick by you if you did."

Mm. From talking to you, I get the idea that being a superhero is more complicated than the comic books make it out to be.

Yeah? Maybe I'll do it, then! Who knows, maybe it'll draw a few other writers out of the woodwork and we can all put our own paper together.

"You know what they say. Nothing is as easy as it looks, right? That and I got roped into this weird role that isn't normal. It has to do with stuff that adds 6 or 7 layers of complex on top of everything."

Kind of got a bum deal for a superhero, huh? [She gives him a sympathetic look.] I bet you're great at it, though.

"Its not all Macy's Day parades and endorsement deals, and you know, the endorsements make people think you're a jerk. Took me a while to learn that, but not everyone has a wealthy playboy feeding them gadgets or is an alien."

"As for great, we all do what we can, right?"

It sounds a lot harder than I thought it would be. [Not that she has ever given much thought to what it would be like to be a professional superhero, but you know.]

But doing the best you can... that's important.
