“Amakusa Chika, open the damned door,” Hikaru knocked rabidly.

“You wouldn’t dare, Yaotome. Beat that door down and the neighbors would surely hear me screaming bloody murder,” Chika taunted back.

“You wouldn’t dare,” Chika felt Hikaru glaring at the door hoping that he’d suddenly acquire x-ray vision and melt the poor piece of wood.

“Ooh, I would dare, Yaotome Hikaru. Just so you try, I’ll scream like a retarded banshee,” she took a deep intake of breath as she set the door unlocked, definitely horrified of what was going to happen next because she knew full well that now wasn’t a time that she had full control over her feelings. She never did have control over her feelings whenever she was with the said guy and it annoyed the heck out of her.

Upon hearing the doorknob click unlocked, Hikaru hastily opened the door only to find a very distraught Amakusa Chika. She looked pale, her eyes deep and red while fresh tears were still falling freely, her shoulders were still shaking.

‘Someone really is gonna scream bloody murder tonight,’ Hikaru clenched his fist as his mind thought of a very much pitiable state of whoever was at fault laying limp on the floor bathed in his own blood. That seemed to be a considerable idea at the moment seeing what he’s done to his best friend. It hurt him seeing her like this. He always hated how tears would fall down her face, it never did suit her or any other person for that matter. It was just too much for him to handle.

Amakusa Chika was a headstrong girl and seeing her in this case was definitely disheartening. Not to mention her three older brothers
would have his head if they saw her like this with him. So he knew better not to call them up at this time.

He offered his shoulder as the girl willingly clung to it as if her life depended on it. He just stayed silent, listening to her sob her heart out.

"...and then I couldn't understand he was still so young. I can't believe he died just like that," she wailed out on the last word she uttered.

Hikaru just gave her a comforting pat on the back as her crying reduced to a couple of sniffles.

He was annoyed with himself that he allowed her to be like this. He clearly recalled how it all started.

Flashback
They were lounging at her place along with her brothers, it was their Friday ritual after all. Just keep calm and chill was their chosen motto for the said event. They made sure how they would always clear their schedule everu Friday night.

"So we were thinking we'd set up some fireworks and blow up the blasted thing," Chika's older twin brothers, Satoru and Hiro, laughed at the memory of blowing up a gift from an admirer of theirs. They were, after all, quite famous for their pranks and they were quite proud to say that they were dashingly good looking.

Chika just shuddered, "you guys are cruel, you know that. The girl really liked you then you just blew up what she worked hard for."

Satoshi, Chika's eldest brother, scoffed, "like you actually know how she'd feel Chika, you've never liked anyone."

The air became tense and all of the males' eyes were settled on the only girl in the room.

Chika was staring at her shoes like it was the most interesting thing in the whole room, avoiding the stares of the four guys in the room.

"You're blushing, li'l sis," Satoru commented on the seemingly obvious.

"You can't be liking someone, can you Chi-kan?" Hiro had an awful smirk, it only meant mischief and Chika was sure she'd never see the living daylights of the following day knowing how the twins would surely never let her live it down.

"Our little girl finally has a crush," Satoshi smiled calmly, "and I actually thought that she'd end up as an old prude."

Chika swatted her older brother, "S-shut up."

"You're actually stuttering over it," Hiro let out a hearty laugh,
"you must've fallen for him bad."

"Who's the lucky guy?" Satoru quirked up a curious eyebrow.

All eyes were set to the girl im question then to her best friend who was laughing incessantly at the TV screen oblivious to the lively chatter.

"...did you just see how he slapped the other guy, what a sissy," Hikaru guffawed at the screen he then noticed that every other guy was staring at him which made him shut up for once, "what's up?"

"Chika here has a crush on someone," Hiro commented wryly.

"I feel sorry for the guy," Hikaru cast his eyes down as a faux look of pity was eminent on his face.

"Shut up," Chika slapped his arm.

"You haven't even answered the question Chika," Satoru's voice sounded commanding, if looks could kill he would've been accused multiple homicide knowing that his sister was finally interested in someone romantically.

"He's erm, uhm, my, no," Chika was still staring her shoes, not even attempting of casting a glance at the people around her.

"Go easy on her guys," Satoshi, being the only logical one, voice sliced through the deadly silence albeit the fact that his tone also hinted protectiveness over their beloved sister.

"He's Yabu," Chika squinted as she admitted the name of her crush.

She seriously needed a set of girl friends to confide in. Not that she wasn't happy with her current company but she needed some girl advice and at least a comforting and supporting air from female company and not the surge of protectiveness from her brothers and not to mention her bestfriend.

"He better treat you right," Hiro's glare seemed to have lessened as Satoshi cast him a glance that clearly said calm-down-you-buffoon.

"It's not like we're together," she blushed harder if it were still possible.

"Of course! Our sister would get what she wants," Satoru let out a proud huff, "she is an Amakusa afterall."

"And Hikaru's going to help you because he's the only guy we'd ever trust and if this Yabu-dude would act like a bastard we wouldn't think twice into pummeling him into oblivion," Hiro eased himself up to a haughty smile.

☆☆☆

Hikaru calmly stroked her hair as her breathing calmed down only to find her sleeping in his arms.

He cussed at himself, why dd he even allow this to happen?

If he weren't much of a jerk he would've won the girl he liked over and again. He mauled himself in his thoughts. He blamed himself for all the wrong things that was happening to her.

Flashback
Hikaru did his best to try to get the two together even if it did mean he'd set up double dates he'd willingly do so.

And now, here he was in a fancy restaurant. As cliché as it was, he walked up towards their reserved table along with his own date, Nakano Erin.

"You look stunning tonight," he commented knowing full well that his comment was directed to another person and she was sitting right across him.

He was jealous. It was only through the several set-ups he'd conducted to get Chika and Yabu along, made him realize feelings towards the former. His inner guts clenched, he thought that why couldn't it be him.

"Thank you," Erin purred a bit flirtily for convinience. He asked her out knowing that the girl had been crushing on him ever since Junior High. He thought it would distract him from his little crush on his best friend and allow himself to 'live a little,' as Chika would say it. But what he thought was wrong, his feelings only grew and he was annoyed how late he realized the said fact.

☆☆☆

"Tonight was lovely," Chika stared at the sky dreamily. Yabu finally asked her to be his girlfriend and she was more than ecstatic to tell her best friend about it. After all, he was there to help her when she needed a companion during those "acquaintance meetings" as she'd put it.

There was an extra jump in her walking that night as they headed back from the playground. Hikaru smiled from a short distance knowing how elated she was feeling and he was happy for her.

"Chika," he called out her name. Said girl faced him with a huge grin plastered on her face, "what if I said that I like you?"

She gave him a hearty laugh and said that "you? Liking me? That's impossible, you're like a brother and all."

But she knew that she was lying and it hurt her to him and herself. She's liked him and Yabu was just a simple fling for her. She shielded herself from the idea that if she confessed that she liked him it would only set to ruin their friendship. And she never wanted that. It would break her heart if tht happened.

"Like a brother, huh?"

He casually leaned down and stroked her cheek with his thumb, letting it linger at the feel of her soft skin. His head descended towards her and left a chaste kiss on the cheek.

"Good night," he strode away from her front porch, "and by the way, I meant what I said."

☆☆☆

Hikaru wanted to bitchslap himself for letting his defenses go down. Not that he wanted to but it was like a spur of the moment. The look on Chika's face all flustered and smiling enigmatically was just too enticing for him to ignore.

That night he swore to himself and to Daiki's secret Pocky stash that he would never let his guard down in front of Chika ever again.

End of flashback
☆☆☆

The soft beams of sunshine passed through the window stirring a very much worn out Amakusa Chika. She'd cry herself to sleep only remembering the vision of a car taking away her boyfriend's life. It was just so cruel, tears just started to well up on her eyes again.

"Chika?"

"Nii-chan?"

"It's Hikaru."

"Ooh."

There was a huge wave of awkward silence that it was not enough for a chainsaw to cut through.

"So," both of them suddenly inquired.

"You, ladies first," Hikaru offered.

"About last night," she whispered her voice barely audible as she tried to wipe away the fresh tears that were threatening yet to fall, "sorry you had to see that."

"It's not like I haven't seen you break down when we were kids," he laughed recalling those days when they were younger, "you even had snot on your nose back then. Good times, good times."

"So you were supposed to say something," she cut him off, preventing anymore embarrassing recollections of the past that involved her in it.

"About what I said to you the night Yabu asked you to be his girlfriend," the seemed to grow thicker and thicker by the minute and it annoyed the hell out of him, "forget about it."

"Why?"

"Because."

"Because?"

She looked at him curiously despite the her still blurry vision but at least her tears were finally subsiding.

"You know that it's easier said than done, Hikaru. It's always been like that."

"Just forget about it, you like Yabu."

"I like him, yes. I like him as a brother. Nothing more than that. But when you were trying to set us up together and all I only felt a hint of admiration towards him. I had an eye for someone else that time."

He shot her a glance filled with curiosity that it made her tensed.

"Who was he?"

"You."

"That's not possible."

"Once again, it's easier said than done, Hikaru."

"But you had Yabu."

He told me yesterday before he," she choked a sob that was making its  way to become audible, "passed. He told me he liked someone else. I forgave him."

"Why?"

"He was honest with me. You can't find that much guys who're like that anymore. I was glad he told it to me straight rather than cheating behind my back," she smiled feign-ly at the memory, "there were no hard feelings between us when we broke up."

"So."

"I still hold those feelings, you know."

"What?"

"I'm giving you a shot."

"What?" he repeated his question, his eyes wide and unbelieving.

"About time you realize what you're missing out on Yaotome Hikaru. It's been damn too long. Yabu told me to tell you that."
