NYC was amazing.
i loved being in the real areas where people actually live and have lives rather than time square.
but of coarse i loveelloveloved the theatres as well.
FIVE yes FIVE shows we ended up seeing, here is a very brief run down:
jersey boys was good, i only teared up a little at the very top of the show because it was our first one and i just want to be up there so bad, i was mooved that people are up there giving 100% day in and day out living the dream.
next was a monday night performance of i actually really loved it and could SO be up there. i thought the girls were pretty week but the guys were great. it was also cool to see the songs in context and here different voices than the ones on the cd. but uhm can we say GRAPHIC! yes. indeed.
tuesday night= the 2008 tony award winning in the heights [no, mom, not INTO the heights...just IN the heights...] ok. so. the dancing was amazing (duh) i loved lin miguel and his energy and heart because HELLO he wrote the flippin thing. and the little dude that was also in camp was greeat buuut the story/ plot line left a bit to be desired. there were lots of holes and some dumb songs...i understand why it won i guess because the rapping thing is a cool new concept but i really didn't care about any of the characters. i thought there were lots of great one-line-ers and the big numbers were good so i can see how one could be blinded by those..
wendesday was the ADORABLE mary poppins! i dont care that its disney so you think it sucks, the magic was flippin AWESOME! when i say that its my dream to fly on stage, THIS is what i'm talking about people! going over the audience and then rising up before each balcony- SO AWESOMEEEEE. the dancing statues were really weird, but other than that i loved it. those 2 little kids are musical theatre MACHINESSS
thursday was a lovely thanksgiving at my sis's sweet pad in Brooklyn. no worries, we were inside so no one was shot. HA..
our final day was friday. i'm so glad we left the best for last. my mom, sister, and i lucked out and got last minute 9th row CENTER tickets to gypsy starring patti lupone. ladies and gents, i have now witnessed musical theatre at an all-new level. this show just truly cannot be compared with the rest. it took a song or two to warm up to patti's CRAZY singing [supposedly she gets a hormone shot every day to sustain everything?] but once i did, oh man. he acting and heart and just ability to REALLY HONESTLY let EVERYTHING go along with boyd gaines and laura benanti was just amazing. i really cant find any other words. this was really a performance i will never ever forget and i hope that i can rise to that level some day.
i could go on for days about this trip but i wont because i have to finish this essay! and OH the food we ate! we literally bought nothing but show tickets, subway passes and food on this trip. oh and a few new show posters for the studio, of coarse. but yes. amazingamazing amazingggggggggg
