As I walked to the metro station today I realized that an old man called me a "piece of shit" last week. I didn't realize it at the time and sort of smiled and continued walking...which I guess is probably what I would have done if I had realized what he said at the moment.
What did I do to you old man???
Maybe he said "You are the shit"
My French isn't good so who knows.
