The words of his mother echoed in his memory, "Don't run from that which can be faced with a broom Mikaelos!"
A small, all knowing smile made its way onto his lips as he drew in the last toxins of his cigarette and released them again with a cloud of smoke before stubbing it out on the porch step.
His mother always did have a way with words, even if anyone rarely understood what in god's name she meant by them. It was her usual manner when scolding one of her children, her voice stern and her brow furrowed with a firm look upon her usually smiling face, but her dark eyes, they were always laughing, even when she tried to be cross.
Mikaelos stood and stretched his arms above his head with a yawn. It was a gorgeous summer evening and as the sun started to dip just below the horizon, the birds began call each other home to their nests and squirrels darted across lawns, eager to get the last of their food stored away somewhere safe.
Still, even amongst the beauty and stillness of the night, his mother's demanding voice commanded his attention. He sighed, knowing that he would go to bed and wake up again; her voice still growling at him in his head until he dealt with the situation at hand.
With dragging feet, he made his way back inside the house and into the kitchen where his wife, Chandra, sat at the kitchen table; a cup of steaming coffee in front of her and a stormy pout upon her face.

"Sorry."

"For what?" she replied, giving him that glare that used to intimidate him during their lectures at uni, he was usually the rowdy one at the back of the class, desperate to get a particular pretty girl to notice him.

"For being an ass," he grinned apologetically and slouched in the chair beside her.

"And?"

'The monkey will always think he's serious, when quite clearly, he's a fool!' - Another of his mother's sayings catapulted into frame.

"For ruining your sister's wedding with my drunkard behaviour and calling your, I mean, OUR new brother-in-law a twat," he said genuinely, "The monkey will always think he's serious, when quite clearly, he's a fool," he finished, quoting his mother.

"Where did that come from?" she asked suspicious.

He rolled his eyes, "My mother. It seems even after nearly 30 years, she will continue to scold me."

Chandra was silent for a moment, but then began to chuckle.

Unsure whether to laugh with her, or be very concerned that he'd got himself into more trouble, Mikaelos waited with baited breath.

"You were rather entertaining, and my sister looked so mad when you broke the figurines on the wedding cake! I rather enjoyed it."

He sighed a sigh of relief.

"And your mother was right," she added, smiling broadly up at him, "You do look like a monkey!"

He grinned, bending down and kissing his wife on her lips, "Just wait until we reach the bedroom dear and you'll see just how much of a monkey I can be!" he said, scooping her small frame up into his arms with a mischievous wiggle of his eyebrows.

One thing was for sure, at this particular moment he was glad he could no longer hear his mother.

As they exited the kitchen and made their way behind the closed doors the phone rang, and the answering machine picked it up...

"Mikaelos! Mikaelos Armande! I know you're home and I've just heard about what you did at lovely Sidi's wedding! Mikaelos! Don't make me come over there! You know, A rhinosaurous once found himself in a den of lions and ....."

But Mikaelous and Chandra were far too busy to care.
