[original] prelude to a dinner party - pg - april 4

Apr 07, 2008 00:43

This is the prelude to the post-it note story I'm doing for April 06. It's going to be awesome, once I take the pictures and stuff. I'm pretty lazy though, so we'll see what happens.

original - prelude to a dinner party - in which mirek knows two people named jeffery (/geoffrey) and gideon is sullen.

"Thanks for taking him at the last minute," Gideon murmured to Valentine and Daisy. He was watching Mirek and Aaron out of the corner of his eye. Mirek was sitting cross-legged on the floor, leaning in close to Aaron and speaking in a voice only he could hear.

"It's no problem," Daisy said.

"We're getting paid for this, right?" Valentine said. Daisy smacked her.

"We're not accepting any money for it, even if they were to offer," she said. She smiled serenely at Gideon. "You two deserve a night off."

"I'd understand if something came up," Gideon continued, still watching Mirek out of the corner of his eye. "Anything." He lowered his voice. "I could pay to make sure that something comes up if you want."

"Gideon!" Daisy said warningly.

"We have to come pick up the kid, cancel dinner, it's all some tragic accident that can't be avoided..." Gideon continued, turning his focus on Valentine, who looked as though she was giving the idea serious consideration. "I'd even be nice to you for a whole month."

Daisy smacked Valentine, and before Gideon could wince in sympathy, Mirek smacked the back of his head. Dammit. He knew he shouldn't have looked away.

"You're not getting out of this," Mirek said, pinching his arm. "It is not going to be nearly as torturous as you make it sound. Jeffery is a lovely man and I'm sure Geoffrey is just as nice."

Gideon crossed his arms and absolutely did not pout.

"First of all, going out to dinner with your ex-boyfriend is weird, okay?" Mirek rolled his eyes. "Secondly, dating someone with the same name as you is equally weird and kind of creepy."

"It's not the same name," Mirek said impatiently. "Jeffery spells his name with a J and Geoffrey spells his name with a G. And Geoffrey is Canadian."

Before Gideon could make his very intelligent and reasonable rebuttal (which he hadn't actually come up with yet, but he was positive it would be intelligent and reasonable and RIGHT), thunder crashed across the sky once again, and while Aaron didn't burst into tears this time the way he had on the way over, his lower lip did quiver just a little and he attached himself to Gideon's leg.

"Daddy, don't go," he whimpered, and Gideon momentarily forgot every other reason he had for wanting to call dinner off. He looked pleadingly at Mirek, who just mutely shook his head. Gideon sighed and kneeled down, wincing at the sounds his knees made as he did so.

"Sorry, buddy, it's Friday night. Friday is Daddy and Tat'ka's special night, remember?" Aaron didn't reply, but he did stick his thumb in his mouth mulishly. "I know you normally stay with Aunt Crystal and Uncle Ted, but Matilda is sick and we don't want you to get sick too, right?" This time, Aaron did shake his head, although he still looked stubbornly betrayed. Gideon glanced up at Mirek for help, but it was Valentine who knelt down next to him.

"C'mon, Aaron, you know Daisy and I have the best snacks, right?" she said. Aaron cocked his head to the side. "And we just got Ratatouille on dvd and we haven't watched it yet. Your dads are just going to go to some dumb dinner party anyway, and those are super-boring. Before your Tat'ka met your dad he used to bring me to them all the time." She stuck her finger down her throat and mimed gagging, which actually made Aaron laugh. Mirek was less amused, arms crossed, lips pursed, but he didn't actually say anything to protest.

"You gonna be okay, buddy?" Gideon asked, and Aaron only hesitated a moment before nodded. Gideon hugged him close, ruffled his hair and stood up. "We love you, kiddo. We'll be back to pick you up later, okay?"

"Okay," Aaron said. He held his arms up to Mirek, who lifted him up into a hug.

"Be good for your aunts, človíček," he said.

"I will," Aaron said. "You'll come back?"

"Always, darling," Mirek said. "Later tonight, after you watch your movie and eat the ridiculously unhealthy food that Valentine gives you just to torment me."

"Okay," Aaron said, giggling. He allowed Mirek to kiss him on the forehead and then eagerly climbed into Valentine's arms. Valentine holding a child, Gideon marveled. That would never not be weird.

They said their goodbyes to Valentine and Daisy and managed to duck out of their apartment before the next crack of thunder sounded, warning of the oncoming storm.

"This is going to be torture," Gideon groused as they sprinted towards the nearest subway enterance, trying to beat the rain home. "You, your hot dentist ex-boyfriend, his accountant new boyfriend, his sister who you're still friends with, her husband, and me at your aunt's apartment while she and her boyfriend--"

"'Gentleman caller,' please," Mirek interrupted.

"While they're down in Atlantic City," Gideon finished. "We're gearing up for the most awkward night ever. I'm absolutely thrilled."

They managed to make it down the steps to the subway station just as the heavens opened up.

"I promise," Mirek said, digging his metrocard out of his pocket, "that I will do absolutely filthy things to you if you just get through this night without complaint."

Gideon raised an eyebrow.

"Define 'filthy.'"

Mirek glanced around, his eyes settling on the very interested looking girl to Gideon's right.

"I will define it when we get home," he finally said. "But suffice it to say that the last several months will be nothing compared to what's to come if you behave like an adult until our guests leave."

Gideon could feel a pleasant heat pooling in the pit of his stomach just thinking about that. Mirek was... very well versed in making Gideon positively writhe with pleasure and he was also surprisingly flexible. Keeping his mouth shut for the rest of the night would be more than worth it.

"Deal," Gideon said. Mirek rocked up on his toes and pressed a chaste, dry kiss to Gideon's mouth.

"It won't be that bad," Mirek insisted, turning to glance down the tunnel for the train and taking Gideon's hand. "I promise."
