[original] breakfast for dinner - g - april 03

Not a great story, mostly dialogue, but it's something. Um, I kind of turned the prompt on its head, but... whatever. Daisy mentions her mother's cooking. That's kind of like following the prompt.

Whatever. It's my community. I can do what I want. ::hairflip::

original - breakfast for dinner - g - in the post-Valentine's Day mess, Daisy tries to lend a hand

Gideon expected Mirek and Valentine to be out of it when he got home. He left them at seven am passed out cold; Mirek was still half dressed and slumped over half the bed and Valentine was fully dressed on the floor in front of the couch. He figured they deserved it. They'd been working to exhaustion nearly every day for the past week and now that Valentine's Day was over, they needed to catch up on their sleep.

He wasn't surprised, then, to open the door to his apartment to near silence. He was surprised when the couch was empty, save for Aaron, who was eating goldfish crackers and watching a Charlie and Lola dvd.

"Hey, buddy," he said, leaning over the back of the couch to press a kiss to the crown of Aaron's head. "Where's Tat'ka?"

"Asleep," Aaron said. He put his bowl of crackers down and stood up on the couch, wrapping his arms around Gideon's neck in a blindingly obvious plea to be lifted up. Gideon granted his wish, bracing most of Aaron's weight on his hip as the boy buried his face in Gideon's shoulder.

"Did Aunt Valentine go home?" he asked.

"Nope," Aaron said. "She's asleep too."

Gideon glanced around the empty living room, and the question was on the tip of his tongue when a voice from the kitchen said, "I managed to drag her into the bedroom." Gideon relaxed. Daisy. The woman in question popped into the doorway between the kitchen and the living room. "Hi, Gideon. I hope you don't mind; I made dinner and stopped by to watch over Aaron so Mara could close up early."

Daisy was small and delicate and blonde and today she was covered in something that might be flower.

"It's fine," he said. "Valentine and Mirek are both in the bedroom?"

"Yeah," Daisy said, smirking and leaning against the doorframe. "I took about a dozen pictures. They should be hilarious."

"I'll bet," Gideon said. He gestured towards the flour on her blue blouse and black pinstriped skirt. "And...?"

She blushed deeply, pink staining her pale skin, even under the coating of flour. "Well, I start to try and cook dinner and--"

"OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED LAST NIGHT?"

He caught Daisy's eye and the grinned maniacally at each other until Daisy cracked up and doubled over, just as Valentine stormed into the room looking sleep mussed and crazed.

"That was not funny!" Valentine snapped at him.

"Not my fault," Gideon said, waving her away with his freehand. "I just got home."

"Hey, sweets," Daisy said, unable to hide her catty smile. It didn't matter, because Valentine practically melted when she saw Daisy, her glare replaced by a soft, warm smile. "Did you sleep well?"

Valentine wrapped herself around Daisy, doe-eyed and compliant. It wasn't a look that Gideon was used to seeing on her; it was startling, actually.

"Yeah, it was great." She nosed at Daisy's cheek and then pulled away, confused, with a bit of flour on her nose. "Baby, what's all over your face?" Daisy blushed again and reached out to brush the powder off of Valentine's nose.

"Well, I was just telling Gideon that I thought I'd help out by making dinner--"

Valentine groaned loudly before Daisy could even finish her sentence.

"Oh, baby, please tell me you didn't try to cook!"

Gideon was a little startled at that, especially when Daisy looked down, suddenly abashed. It wasn't that he was a total control freak in the kitchen, but it was his sanctuary and he did like things to be neat and in order....

He tried to subtly look around her to inspect the damage, but he couldn't see more than a splatter of flour on the floor.

"I was trying to make pancakes!" Daisy said. "I can do that, I really can, but things got a little out of hand. I can get it under control, though. It's no big deal."

"Babe, you can't cook," Valentine muttered into Daisy's neck. "You probably destroyed Gideon's entire kitchen."

Gideon almost whimpered, finally elbowing around the pair of them to take in the damage.

It was better than he thought it would be. There was definitely flour everywhere, but most of the mess seemed to be just that--flour and water. One of his frying pans was a little scorched--it looked like someone had tried to start making pancakes without greasing the pan first--but nothing he couldn't clean up relatively easily.

"I appreciate the thought, Daisy, I really do," Gideon said. "Next time I think I'll do it myself, though."

"I helped!" Aaron said brightly. "But Daisy tol' me to go outside and watch Charlie and Lola 'cause she needed to... um..."

"Concentrate," Daisy said. "And by concentrating, I realized that your dad is the only one who should be allowed to cook." She tweaked Aaron's nose and he smiled shyly at her. "I'm really sorry, Gideon. I just wanted to do my part to help out."

"It's okay," he said to her. "If you want, and if Valentine will watch teevee with Aaron for a little bit, I'll show you all my secret tricks and we can have breakfast for dinner ready before Mirek wakes up."

"That would be great," Daisy said. "My mom was a terrible cook, too. We had a live-in cook growing up and mom tried to write it off as purely a status symbol, but my dad claims she can't even make coffee without messing something up."

Gideon shuddered, handing Aaron off to Valentine. He couldn't imagine what his life would be like if he couldn't even make coffee. He'd probably live at Starbucks.

"Finish your video with Valentine, okay buddy?" he said to Aaron, who was already wiggling to get out of Valentine's arms and head back for the couch.

"Okay!" he said.

Once they were gone, he dug around in a drawer and pulled out two dish towels. "Help me clean up and I swear you'll knock Valentine's socks off the next time you try to make pancakes," he said.

Daisy grinned and took one of the towels from him. "Deal!" she said. "I'll best my mother in something yet."
